Underrated. Six days before MITB 2011. He went a bit overboard with his demands of his face being on the Titantron and turnbuckles, but everything else was great.
Vince deserves some props here. He did indeed eat a "crap sandwich", and seemed embarrassed/mortified at some of things that were being said about him.
Cena, while goofy at the beginning, made some really good points later on. One thing I always loved about this particular feud was that even though they were feuding, Cena knew why Punk was upset.
Punk was great at the end. Calling Cena the NY Yankees in Boston (Cena's hometown, six days before the match in Punk's town) After being punched by the champ, then saying "this is exactly why I am leaving" and ripping up his unsigned contract. "Ill go be best in the world somewhere else."
Loved it all.

By far the best contract signing ever and one of my favorite segments in history. Watch it atleast once a year

Better than the next contract signing segment Punk would have with Triple H.

It was great because you could tell Punk was saying whatever the hell he wanted to, whether scripted or not, so it felt a lot more genuine even with the OTT contract demands. It's crazy how back then a 30 minute talking segment with Punk and whoever he was feuding with was better than anything else on the show. He really was on fire.
That's precisely why his skinny fat ass needed to be taught a lesson. Thanks, Hunter.

Such a great segment. That whole feud and build up was so great it's amazing how badly they ended up ruining it. I still think them dropping the ball with Punk so badly is one of the worst mistakes they've ever made.

The Start of something great That had an awful end. Strange ending too. I never thought a ladder match between Triple H and Kevin Nash would be the resolution.

Thanks based H for cooling off Punk's jets and not caring about him becoming the new WWE megastar I feel like that angle is one of the under appreciated Triple H bullshit moves. The heat is Punk/Vince/Cena. All of a sudden. Triple H is the center of attention at Summerslam, is portrayed as Cena and Punk's superior in terms of badass-ness and then he gets his buddy Nash a main event slot on top of it when he REALLY had nothing to do with it!

Kinda dit it with Angle back in 2000 as well, with the whole Stephanie story which made HHH look like a badass and defacto-face, while Angle looked like a dork, hot for Steph's pie and not on H's level Not to mention his RVD, Booker, Kane, Jericho stuff in 2002/03

I always thought that segment was better than the worked shoot/pipebomb. Steve Austin had Vince's number time and again, but they really made it feel like "if Punk leaves with the belt, the WWE will be a smouldering crater". You could tell Vince truly believed Cena wasn't going to win (with how unconfidently he'd show his faith in Cena), and that he had to pull this off right. Punk had the ball in his court and had Vince cowering in a way Austin or The Rock never ever did. Austin/Rock were a threat to Vince himself, but never the company. And Vince always carried a bravado during the Invasion as if his company was going to get through. He showed none of that in the Punk segment. His entire demeanor was one of "if we leave this ring without a deal done, my company is dead".
And boy did Punk weave that. He knew he had Vince by the balls and could just ask for whatever he wanted, because Vince couldn't, JUST COULDN'T let Punk leave the company as the champion. And Cena coming out to counter the idea that he was chopped liver (like Punk seemed to suggest in his words and Vince seemed to suggest in his demeanor), for Punk to drop some truth on him too.
That whole segment was fantastic.

I thought Punk came off incredibly whiny throughout that segment, and by the end I wanted Cena to beat him sooooo bad.
Maybe Punk would argue "that's what I wanted!" if I asked him about it, but he was clearly trying to play babyface. It didn't work for me, personally.

It was a great segment. What isn't mentioned often is that he cut another great promo in the beginning of the show where he actually started off as a heel ("And no I'm not talking about you guys because none of you matter") but then had the crowd in the palm of his hands when he went off on his megaphone and fully turned face at the end of the night ("Am I a good guy? No, I don't wear a white hat but I know what these people want"). It was an amazing evolution of CM Punk's character in a single night and he hit it out of the ballpark.
I have my gripes about the real person nowadays but his character in 2011 was one of the greatest ever.

I hated the SummerSlam contract signing when Cena would grin and laugh off everything and Triple H would try to get his one ups over Punk during the whole thing.

I was at this show. Had real good seats, too.
Final segment went long, though. I just barely made my train back home.

You know what I always forget about this time period? Punk was still technically the leader of the Nexus when this was going on.
