The scene in the church where Giovani Ribisi was talking about pretending to be asleep so he didn't have to talk to his mom. That was the scene that did it for me. Waterworks.

It's a great movie but all the way through it I couldn't shake the feeling that the entire mission to retrieve Private Ryan was utterly stupid.

6 LIVES FOR ONE?!
So instead of Mama Ryan getting one more letter, SIX moms(+ Carpazo's dad) get letters instead? Just hold back the last Ryan letter a week.

I also question the decisions of Tom Hanks' character, both in allowing their prisoner (who ultimately kills him) to walk away when he still had fighting capability, and trying to hold that bridge with a relatively small and ill-equipped squad against a superior Panzer division. They may have been better off just blowing the bridge.

I always felt so sorry for his mother. It's especially poignant when you consider that when he's dying, he calls out for her.

my honest opinion of Saving Private Ryan is the Normandy Beach landing scenes are fantastic but the rest of the film is merely just a very good film, I am also not a fan of the German soldier coming back at the end just felt too convenient

I hate this movie so much May I ask why? I think it's a great movie, with flaws mentioned here, and my own issues with it, but I've never heard anybody say they hate this movie.

Don't hate it, but the plot is ungodly dumb. Altering it slightly, and don't make it so a whole gang of people die because one mother is sad, and it's an A+ of a film. Make so that they have to save him because he knows some vital piece of information and the film would make way more sense.

I just wonder if that's how they tracked down whoever they were looking for. I mean, sending a group of guys all over, or just looking up his records and finding out where he is or who he's with?

I like to pretend that Vin Diesel's character is Riddick.
This is his origin story. He was a World War II soldier, killed in action.
Then brought back to life and sent into the future where he was put in prison, got that thing done to his eyes and then fought those Pitch Black aliens.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niland_brothersThe Niland brothers were four American brothers of Irish descent from Tonawanda, New York, serving in the military during World War II. Of the four, two survived the war, but for a time it was believed that only one, Frederick "Fritz" Niland, had survived. After the reported deaths of his three brothers, Fritz was sent back to the United States to complete his service and only later learned that his brother Edward, missing and presumed dead, was actually captive in a Japanese POW camp in Burma. Steven Spielberg's 1998 film Saving Private Ryan is loosely based on the brothers' story.[1]
