I wonder how the guys feel when going from working the super dome to working high school gyms. I would think they would understand. You really can't keep going in WWE for years and years, into your 60s. If they love wrestling or love a pay day, at least the indies provide that. Maybe they could hook up with WWE and get a legends deal but perhaps it isn't enough, they want to, need to, or have to keep wrestling. I think a lot of guys would wrestle in front of a family of four, at their house, if they were paid an appearance fee. I don't think they would mind. I think if it's a case where a promoter BS's the wrestler into thinking they will have a packed house, only to have 50 or so fans, that is when they may get disappointed.

One of my more positive experiences was meeting Glacier. SUPER nice dude, really personable, and you could tell he just loved doing the shows and talking to the fans. Just a really nice guy.

Jimmy Valiant was the first wrestler I ever met. He headlined a show at my elementary school (against Stan "The Man" Lee) when I was in 5th grade.
He had a table set up at Walmart, either the day of the show or the day before. I stopped by and he told me about the show. I told him it was my school and I already had my ticket. He seemed pretty happy about that and gave me a signed photo, which I still have.
When I walked into the gym for the show, I heard, "HEY, BROTHER!" It was Jimmy Valiant, waving at me. I think I ended up buying another signed picture and my dad took a picture of us (with one of those old 110 cameras) that I also still have.
There was actually a pretty good house and they put on a good show that night.

I went to a show where Sabu got in the ring during intermission and his handler said it would be $10 for a picture with him. The crowd was very small and you could hear people say, "Ten bucks! Pfft! I'd do five not ten!" Other fans could be heard agreeing. You could see Sabu telling his handler to take the $5. The handler said $5 and six people got in the ring after for pictures with him. It was sad, but that's independent wrestling sometimes. Sabu: Smart business man.

Scott Steiner. Bloated, hideously muscular for a 54 year old man and covered head to toe in awful tattoos. The thing about Steiner is he's one of the few former WWE/WCW guys that is successfully pulling in high 6 figures each year on the independent scene/legend signing expos/shoot DVD's without putting much stress on his body, dealing with a heavy grind of a schedule, or working for peanuts. But for sad I would say Shane Douglas being on the card headlined by the n-word Taker. I'm just going to leave the link here to the poster because I obviously can't upload the image. i.imgur.com/9Lmwk8R.jpg

That was a whole lot of exposure for him compared to his ECW run and brief flirtations with the mainstream.

Met him in 2007 about 5 months after he left WWE and there was a crowd of about 400 there to see him, he worked an 8 minute main event in which he just did his big spots and hit a facebuster for the win. After the match he came out to sign stuff (For free mind you) and got mobbed by about 50 people. He wasn't happy about it but signed for everyone and was treated like a big star. Don't know how well he'd do 10 years later though.

Bobby Fulton vs Nikolai Volkoff, with no ring: The idea of having a pro-wrestling style match on a mat just seems surreal.

Here's a Sabu story for you. Back in 2014 the fed I was with was putting together this super show with Bobby Lashley, Sabu, Carlito and Chris Masters on the card. In the end it were only Masters and Carlito. Don't know why Lashley deal fell through, and from what the promoter told us, Sabu asked for more money after being paid half his booking fee weeks before the show and recording a promo hyping the event. He was supposed to get the rest of the money after his match. The promoter told him to keep the fee and to stay home, he was off the card. On the day of the show Sabu filmed a video of himself sitting in the airport waiting for the tickets that the fed was supposed to order for him and claiming "That guy (the promoter) f****d me".

Keep the fee and stay home? Why?
Odds are booking Sabu is at the very least a 500 dollar investment so why not get the money back? Also, a rumour going around here is back in the day Sabu held up a local promoter at a show for weed and refused to perform until he got some. I guess they got him some because he did perform but Sabu sounds like a really unprofessional douche.

Bobby Fulton vs Nikolai Volkoff, with no ring: This. While I recall the context, it still will never not be my answer to this thread's premise.... Jimmy Valiant was the first wrestler I ever met. He headlined a show at my elementary school ( against Stan "The Man" Lee) ...........WHAT?!

This guy has been around east Tennessee and western North Carolina indies all my life. I just saw him listed for a show coming up in a few weeks.
