You all picked this film by a lot so I inducted it into Monster Crap despite not being even close to worst of the year for me. But I do understand your choice and yes, the film is bad. I voted for Max Steel as I felt that was truly the worst film on that list. A movie that I regret paying $6 to see and I know that is not much, but still.
I am a movie who has defended the 2016 Ghostbusters film and stands by his own positive opinion of the film, even though a lot of people may want to lynch me for it. However, this was an interesting read. Good job.

I saw this over the weekend on Free TV... I felt ripped off.
Now... to be fair I didn't think the cast did a bad job acting on it.... it wasn't incompetently shot... save for a few scenes that could have been eliminated or shorter it wasn't terribly edited.... The CG I can't really describe as good especially for the budget they had but it wasn't laughably terrible...mostly
But the script was f***ing awful. It was a long two hours of failed jokes... which is especially bad as they obviously focused on it being a comedy first and foremost.
Not to mention it also did one of the biggest sins in remakes. There were a bunch of "it was in the original, so here it is...without the context of the original so it really makes no sense here" moments.
edit: and reading your write up... yeah you pretty much said the same thing.

I wanted to like Ghostbusters 2016. It was it's own worst enemy.
I didn't like the ending.
*SPOILERS*
It was formulaic - you could substitute a Ghostbuster for an Avenger or a Transformer, battling through a sea of generic enemies.

I saw this on a plane up to the introduction of Leslie Jones character... I can live without seeing the rest.

While reading this review. I realised something.
This movie is sexist. Sexist against men.
Every single guy in the movie is a moron and most are jerks too.
The women are the usual put upon ladies just trying to survive while every stupid man is holding them down.

another problem I had with it was Wiig and McCarthy, who are clearly meant to be "the stars", are some of the worst written characters I've ever seen.
Wiig's character really has no reason to be there and for the most part could be removed entirely from the movie and you wouldn't really miss her. The few plot points she does have could EASILY be given to any of the other characters with like 2 minutes of a rewrite.
Cutting Wiig would have also given McCarthy's character more to do as well and helped flesh her out since her character seemed to be "Scientist that likes soup". Having HER be the one that loses her job because of the book she published might actually have given her some much needed depth.

I watched the movie over the weekend, and it wasn't bad or good, it was meh. Kate McKinnon carried the movie to that status, and absolutely the action sequence of her tearing through ghosts was awesome.

Thor was hilarious though as the gender reversed Janine. Oddly enough, Bill Murray stunk up the place.

Only recently saw this, and enjoyed it far more than the original. The main team was far better balanced with their own specialised knowledge and skills. (Which obviously wasn't a priority for the original given that they cut most of Ernie Hudson's material and backstory right before filming because... Reasons?)
Also, Holtzmann might be the most consistently entertaining character in the whole franchise.

Reading that article was as close as I'll ever come to actually watching the movie. I already thought the humor looked horrid, then I read about the queef joke. Holy christ. The original Ghostbusters is George Carlin while this new one is Dane Cook.

Yeah, I would agree that it's not the worst of the year. That's still Yoga Hosers but a wide margin. Ghostbusters 2016 is just a really, really poorly written, stupid movie with awful jokes. It's a pointless gimmick of a movie that was designed to cause the reaction it did. I still feel sorry for James Rolfe/hate Patton Oswalt for being so petty. It will forever be known as something not remotely worth the garbage fire it caused. The only good thing about the movie was Kate McKinnon.
