I'll second this... I've made it my goal over the years to collect a lot of his early stuff, and the hits tend be more frequent than the misses. If you can get a copy, Portraits of His Children has some great tales, as does the Sandkings collection. Although a bit preachy, Tuf Voyaging is a lot of fun (and certainly relevant to some of the issues we're facing ecologically).

I had students analyze "The Second Kind of Loneliness" in my American literature class a few years ago and this year my Grade 10 students dissected passages from A Game of Thrones on their exam.

If I have time, I'll take a snapshot of my GRRM shelves at home and will post it here.
