The first one is a pain but I never could beat the third game. Even Game Genie wouldn't help you

2 is hardest just because back when it came out you had no clue how to do some things. But if you found out, the game was pretty easy. On a whole though, 3 is the hardest IMO.

See I keep hearing about how you needed a guide or whatever to beat C2. I rented it not long after it came out and beat it that weekend. Just took a bit of trial and error. For me the easiest was part 2,then 1 was hard but not super hard, with part 3 being incredibly hard.

Easily Dracula's Curse.
The levels where you climb the castle while the screen is shifting is ridiculous. I still can't beat one of those levels due to having to fight three bosses right after that, so I'm always forced to go the other route to beat it.
Speaking of beating it, while I do think Dracula is easier than he was in the first game, the last level is an endurance round regardless.
Side note, I got really good at the first Castlevania due to the fact if you use the cross boomerang on Death or Dracula while they're shooting a projectile weapon, IT WILL FREEZE YOUR GAME AND FORCE YOU TO RESTART. Seriously, I really hated having to fight Frankenstein like four times before I had another chance at Dracula.

Yeah, it's Dracula's Curse. Unforgiving and brutal.

I've died so many times just trying to walk downstairs in 3. It just seems like sometimes the controls just give up mid-way through going diagonally and down ya go.

Really the second game is not bad at all but too many people take the word of AVGN I think its the vagueness of the game that hurts its reputation. But, even if you take the easy path, Dracula's Curse was brutal. I can only imagine scaling the entire castle from the catacombs.

Third one. The last 2 levels are just plain brutal. And Dracula having 3 forms? Yikes.

Add another vote for 3. You could eventually "solve" 1, and 2 was more "cryptic" than difficult, and in the NES age that was common ground. 3 is consistently kicking you in the teeth. You NEVER get comfortable with that one, all the way to the end, no matter how stocked on lives you may be or what your secondary item is. It's one of the most raw difficult games on the NES, not because of bad controls or design, not because of cryptic progression or having to know beforehand how to clear something (something the Megaman games creep too far into for my taste), but just pure enemy placement and level construction. That and the original Ninja Gaiden (haven't played 2 or 3) go hand-in-hand in that regard.

For me, Castlevania 1 is the hardest b/c of the boss fights against the Grim Reaper and (especially) Dracula.
Castlevania III is certainly tough, but I got good by playing it a lot. It's tough but fair.

Castlevania 3. 1 was a long timing Puzzle where everything flowed. 2's difficulty was basically in fighting the game itself from it's vagueness and mistranslation. 3 looks like the original but plays differently. Really the second game is not bad at all but too many people take the word of AVGN People like me disliked CV2 long before there was an AVGN show or even Youtube for that matter. Yeah, I have always thought Castlevania 2 was terrible from when I first played it and at that point the internet wasn't really a thing.

I love 2 and have played it more than the original.
But in terms of difficulty, I'm in line with y'all. 3-1-2. It became an ongoing mission among my brother, our dad, and myself to beat that game. I can't remember if any of us actually succeeded.

The game is made easier with Grant or Sypha, but CV3 is still the toughest one.
Though the Japanese original's difficulty is considerably fairer. Damage by bad guys is consistent across the entire game instead of getting harder with each level.
