Cuz he was cast of course, but was in the mediocre Mission Impossible 2 instead. So he's Wolvie, and Jackman is out. A)Does Hugh ever become big in the US/globally without really breaking out playing Logan and B)Does Dougray's casting create some sort of ripple effect where the X movies aren't as big as they are, and maybe triggers a butterfly effect to where it takes way longer for the superhero genre to blow up as it did in the 2000s?
Essentially what I'm asking is how big an effect do you think Dougray NOT being Wolverine had on both is and Jackman's career, and maybe the larger movies and superhero movies as a whole?

Considering he has all the charisma and acting skills of a haemorrhoid, the original X-Men film series would have been done after one film. You can't go wrong with actors like McKellen and Stewart but the first X-Men film hangs on the casting of Wolverine and I don't think Scott is good enough to carry it. Looking back, casting a relative unknown as your lead in what you were hoping would become a franchise was a massive risk. But it paid off and then some.

The X-Men comics were so big in the 1990s, and Wolverine specifically was so iconic a character of the team, that it was blue-chip to succeed as a film no matter what....and whoever played Wolverine was blue-chip to be an immediate movie star and action hero.
If Dougray Scott DOES play Wolverine, we're talking about his career like we talk about Hugh Jackman's career and this is "What if that Jackman guy on Broadway played Wolverine? Would Dougray Scott have had the career he had?"

This fascinates me. Kind of like the acting equivalent of the Wally Pipp rule.
I assume Scott was what the studio and crew wanted or else he wouldn't have been cast. So I imagine he would have been a solid Wolverine. Gotta be good to get the role.
Same time, comic book movies had been abysmal outside of Superman and Batman. X-Men was the first major step since Spider-Man wouldn't be for another two years. Expectations had to be sky high.
So if I'm Scott, I can sleep at night thinking he dropped out to do a movie that already had a hit and was expected to do a huge sequel. Whereas the comic book movie could be hit or a huge miss.
But this will always be one of my biggest Hollywood "What Ifs."

I still would have liked to see how Bob Hoskins would have done as Wolverine.

Wolverine helped launch Hugh Jackman, but I don't think it does the same to Dougray. As if he was good enough or had enough star power he could have gotten bigger parts after MI: 2, I see him having the same kind of career as some of the other stars in that film that weren't Storm, Magneto, or Xavier. Modest success for a few years, probably a romantic comedy or two and the rest of the career kinda looks like the way it does now. As for Jackman, I think he would have had some modest success. But probably not as the A-lister he is now. As for the X-films I see them lasting till the third film and getting rebooted.

Famke can always cash in on being the hottest and best Bond girl. And James Marsden has a fantastic career. Never has to carry a movie, but always a major character. Enchanted, Superman Returns, The Notebook, 2 Guns, Anchorman 2, etc.

In terms of how superhero movies would do, Disney still would have bought Marvel and started making films. And they would have put the same effort into them meaning they would still be block busters. The only thing that would have been hurt here is the X Men franchise and Diseny/Marvel would have gotten the rights back sooner (it's going to happen).
