I'm leading a trip to Japan in May, but I haven't been to Japan since 2003 (aka before smartphones). I don't know about the wifi quality where I'll be (mostly Sakai, Osaka), but I assume it's not the best from what I am reading. We also won't be staying at a hotel, which was where I had planned to just wifi to Skype home. Now I'm not sure what to do. I'm only going to be there for two weeks, but I don't want to use someone else's phone, and my Straighttalk phone is so ancient I'm sure it won't work with a SIM card.
Any ideas of what to do here? One of my friends is paranoid he can't check in at home (and it's his first trip abroad). Is it even work it to buy a sim card or a disposable phone, or are we at the mercy of cafes with no free wifi?

Supposedly, metro and train stations have free wifi so you could try those.

We're going in April and we're getting a pocket wifi. Have you looked into that?

There's various WiFi spots around, so that's what I wound up using last time. I downloaded something like WhatsApp to send messages and stuff. Didn't bother with any sim cards or anything because I'm technologically incompetent.

kalmia might have a much better answer than this, but going international, I've used XCOM Mobile for permanent mobile wifi and unlimited data, and it works great and I can't imagine going any other route at this point.
EDIT: To clarify, XCOM Mobile is pocket wifi. You just rent it for however long you need it.

I recently went to Osaka. Inside the airport near the entrance (I'm thinking how Kansai airport was situated) are a couple places that offer a wifi egg/device. The number of days you use it depends on cost, but I was there for five days and paid $50 dollars. Basically you turn the device on, connect to the network, and off you go) When you go back to the airport you drop it off and you are good to go. Have fun and if you ever need to convert yen to dollars it's basically: 100 yen = 1 dollar 1000 yen = 10 dollars etc. Also in Kansai airport is a place to buy day passes to use the subway unlimited amounts during the day.

I went to Japan last year and from my experiences I wouldn't bother with getting a sim card or pocket wifi.
Because hell if need to some free wifi all you have to do is just go to a 7-11,Lawsons and Family Mart and you will be sorted.
