Saw it, liked it more than its predecessor by quite a bit. Before I get into my question, figure I'll rank the films for the hell of it.
-1990 movie, by far, one of my favorite superhero films easily
-Maaaaaaaybe Out of the Shadows? I really like how goofy it is, it kinda feels like the original toyline in film form with stuff like the manhole cover-launching Turtle Van. As much as it pains me to say it, weakest part may be the miscast Casey Jones. I swear to god, though, if he was trying to play Chris O'Donnell as Robin, he did a bang up job.
-Second one for nostalgia, though it's also kind of painful to watch with how neutered it got from the first.
-2007 animated one. I really wish I liked this more, but the villains are dull as hell. The Raph/Leo encounter is easily the best part of the film.
-2014. It's got some decent scenes, and I've partially made peace with Megan Fox, but it's still just bogged down with a lot of shit it didn't need to be.
-Ninja Turtles 3. This movie is f***ing terrible. Think what you will about the "Bayturtles". I'm not really sold on them entirely, but dear lord, they are better than this. They also look better, too, the unblended spots just make it look like the Turtles are all incredibly ill. It isn't quite Coming Out Of Our Shell tour bad, but the costumes are just horrendous.
I have not seen Turtles Forever yet, so I will refrain from ranking that one, though I have heard good things.
Alright, to my question: Splinter gives Leo some advice during the course of the film, considering that as far as the turtles go, the main story seems to be Leo's struggles to be a good leader and his being kind of a jerkoff about all of it, and the desire the other turtles have to participate in human life, something Leonardo doesn't approve of and cannot reconcile with his leadership. He ultimately gets through it, of course, and I think it's a decent arc for the film. Thing is, though, this is pretty much all Splinter does, offering the advice.
Why the shit didn't they bring him, too, at the end of the film when they took Casey, April, and f***ing VERNON to deal with the portal to Dimension X? Did Splinter have any excuse to not come with him? I think he'd have helped quite a bit, don't you? Was there any reason for him not to come? Laura Linney saw the Turtles and all, so it isn't like her seeing Splinter, too, would be an issue. It isn't like the Foot Clan are actively looking for the base, so it isn't like someone needed to stay behind to guard it.
I still ultimately had fun with the film for what it is, but that, Casey's miscasting, and the early terrible April dressup scene are really my only real complaints. Hell, Tyler Perry's even perfectly decent in it, and that's as someone who usually can't stand the guy. Check it out if you like 1987 cartoon goofy shit, it's probably the closest to that you're ever going to get in live action.
