Is it wrong i'm kinda annoyed at him about that? Especially when I only went for an asthma review? I think it's more to do with my height I think - apparently my ideal should be 140-145. I mean I didn't go off on him but I did walk out a tad annoyed.

No matter what I go to the doctor for, she tells me to quit smoking. They're just doing their job.

Pretty much everyone has some weight they need to lose these days. I wouldn't take it personally.

Is there a reason why you need to? Like high blood pressure? Bad joints? Do ya lift bro? Was he using the BMI?

According to the BMI, John Cena is obese.

According to the BMI, John Cena is obese. 99.9% of people who weigh as much as he does probably are obese, though. BMI is a good rule of thumb even if overweight people don't like it because it calls them overweight and they can think of cases who are extreme outliers in the context of the general population. Those John Cenas, those world-class NFL athletes the BMI would classify as obese, they are a percent of a percent of the population. There is no catch-all system. It still works for what it is overall.

I'm 5'10 and am supposed to be between 155-165. I can stand to lose a few pounds, but I agree, it's probably due to your height.

BMI is a terrible scale, it's not meant for individuals it was designed for populations.
it doesn't take into account water weight, muscle mass, bone density or any other stuff that goes into your weight that isn't fat.

Maybe he thinks losing weight would help with your breathing.
I don't think we have many doctors here at FAN.

To be honest 164 sounds high for someone that's 5'2" unless you have high muscle mass and a low body fat %?
BMI, as others have said, is a terrible measure on an individual basis.

Depends on if you're asking rhetorically. He/she didn't come to work that day with insulting anyone as his/her priority. The person is telling you what's in your best health interest. Why would you be mad with that? (That's rhetorical.)

Weight affects asthma and that's why they weigh you at every review. Maybe they wouldn't say the same thing to others at your size/weight but it's more important in your case, they'd also want to make sure you don't put on any weight.
If they advised to lose weight via more exercise they may think it will help lung function too.
Don't go too far in the opposite direction either, being underweight can also make asthma worse.

"Hey doc, mind your own damn business." Glad I could help. But...an interest in their patient's health and well-being is literally a doctor's business....

I always get a chuckle from the plethora of ''BMI is bullshit, anyway!'' posts that pop up in threads like this one. Dude isn't hopping on some scale at the mall, he's having a one on one visit with his doctor. I think it's safe to assume that he's not chiseled out of granite if the doc's on him to drop a few pounds. (No offense meant, OP, I'm no Adonis myself.)
