Not really since he was just doing his job.
Hell a couple of years ago I kept on getting bad rashes and my GP told me point blank that losing weight would help.

"Hey doc, mind your own damn business." Glad I could help. But...an interest in their patient's health and well-being is literally a doctor's business....

99.9% of people who weigh as much as he does probably are obese, though. BMI is a good rule of thumb even if overweight people don't like it because it calls them overweight and they can think of cases who are extreme outliers in the context of the general population. Those John Cenas, those world-class NFL athletes the BMI would classify as obese, they are a percent of a percent of the population. There is no catch-all system. It still works for what it is overall. I was just trying to be funny. Honestly I swear I've seen this exact same post in other BMI threads here and on Reddit. Unless it has been you making the same post multiple times! What a twist! But yeah in all seriousness when people post this response without any irony, John Cena is indeed a 1%'er in fitness and a <1%'er if he is natty. Like yeah BMI is still a pretty bad indicator especially if someone does indeed have lots of muscle mass but it's not that bad of an indicator if that someone doesn't have really any mass or athleticism.

A doctor told an overweight person they should lose weight. How exactly is this a problem?

Next visit, just walk in eating a full bag of Doritos. Show that doctor who's boss.

Like other people have said, the BMI is a really bad way of determining whether or not someone is overweight. According to the BMI, I should weigh no more than 160 pounds (I'm 5'11''), yet when I did weigh that much, I was skin and bone. I'm around 200 now, and even though the BMI basically tells me I'm a fat ass now, I feel much healthier.

I always get a chuckle from the plethora of ''BMI is bullshit, anyway!'' posts that pop up in threads like this one. Dude isn't hopping on some scale at the mall, he's having a one on one visit with his doctor. I think it's safe to assume that he's not chiseled out of granite if the doc's on him to drop a few pounds. (No offense meant, OP, I'm no Adonis myself.) I find it odd that people aren't saying that being 5'2 and 164lbs is a bit heavy.Sure it all depends on your body frame and stuff. But I have a small frame but back when I was 5'2" I know I was at most 120lbs. I didn't hit 160 until I was 6 foot tall. Now it has been years, early 90s,but when I went to join the Army they used BMI. At 6'3" I had to be 210lbs or under to join. And until about 6 years ago I stayed between 160 and 200lbs. Currently I am down to 203lbs trying my best to hit 200 before summer.
