I am having a hard time. The dog we've had for almost 16 years, may have to be put down. He can't stand up anymore, and for the past few weeks, he's fallen down stairs, and off my parents bed.

Oh no, I hope he's going to be alright. I'm a dog owner and lover myself, and the idea of losing him is heartbreaking. Best wishes to you and yours.
Hang in there, doggy.

Aw, I'm so sorry. I remember how hard it was when my cats entered old age and it was obvious that they wouldn't be here much longer. Seeing a pet in pain like that sucks; they really do become a member of the family.

I'm so sorry to hear that. If its any consolation, the fact that your dog lived for 16 years means that it had so much love in its life and such good owners that it just doesn't want to go. My mom's cat Sara was the same way a few years ago. She was about the same age as your dog and the vet had given her only about 2 or 3 weeks to live, and she ended up living for close to 3 months and went comfortably and peacefully in her sleep.

We're going to bring him to the vet, at 5:00. Everyone is saying that maybe something can be done, to make him comfortable, without having to put him down, but I am preparing myself anyway. I don't want him to suffer anymore, but I feel like I'm letting him down, if anyone asks me what to do.

You've loved and cared for him for 16, you've never let him down, I'm sure of that.

I'm so nervous. I went to my aunt's house after work. She told me she's going to try to help take my mind off of it, and we're going to go to the store. Helping her, will temporarily distract me.

You've loved and cared for him for 16, you've never let him down, I'm sure of that. This is the mindset that you need at this moment.

I'm worried about how my other dog will be, too. He's been right by this dog, any time something happens, he comforts him

Well, I guess I'll share that my dog has been really sick today, maybe the most sick she's ever been, throwing up everywhere and being withdrawn or sluggish. I've experienced this with my other dog over the years, but not this one.

I don't want him to suffer anymore, but I feel like I'm letting him down, if anyone asks me what to do. If it comes to the worst, know that he's not suffering anymore, for what consolation it's worth. You're not letting him down at all, though - not in the slightest.

I am not looking forward to this at all. When my mom gets out of work, we're going to pick up the dog. Enen if it doesn't come to that, I'm still nervous.

I know how you feel. We have lost three cats in Two years, all were 13.
