I think "Top 10 Best JRPG Main Protagonists Of JRPGs Series That Have Some Sort Sizeable Of Following In America" would be more appropriate.
Then again, number 5 shouldn't be on either list, but what do I know. Then again again, it's watchmojo, the fact that they've remembered that Phantasy Star existed is the shocker in this whole thing.

I have always found Cloud to be really bland as a character. This list is crap. Where's Terra? How come only main characters are listed, and not their other party members that have interesting and poignant backstories? since they are going main characters I'm assuming Terra isn't elligible since... Final Fantasy 6 didn't really have one. The overall story is spread over pretty generally between a bunch of characters. |

Yeh,Cloud is a pretty crappy character,he is pretty obviously there only because he is iconic.
Even Yu Narukami ,which i love the game,is a bland character because he is supposed to be a stand-in for the player (Though he is pretty cool in the spin-offs where he has a personalaty).
I would have placed Neku there, one of the best character's growth I have ever seen.And Kingdom Hearts is such a mess of everything,including characters, better than Cloud tho.

20 years and people are still acting like FFVII and Cloud are the best JRPGs have ever been? Don't get me wrong, I like FFVII a lot and I do think Cloud is a fairly good character but I don't see anything special about him. There are countless far more interesting characters in the Final Fantasy franchise. Hell, there are countless more interesting characters in Final Fantasy VII. So to say he's the best hero in all of JRPGs... just, just no. And freaking Sora? Really? Look, I thought he was okay but he's got about as much personality as the default characters in RPG Maker. Also, does Kingdom Hearts really count as an RPG? It's more like an action game with RPG elements. I know it's not a popular opinion but I still say Squall is the best. I could go on for hours about why and in fact, I already have (ha ha! Cheap plug) so here's the short version: he's a layered character to begin with. He has a proper, complex arc. In spite of having a tragic past, he doesn't let it define him. I like how when he has to do something he doesn't want to, instead of complaining about it and going all "woe is me", he looks for the fastest and most efficient way to get it done. I very much relate to his "good and evil isn't a matter of sides" mentality. He is a surprisingly efficient leader... there's a lot more but that's the reasons that are coming off the top of my head. |

Heck, here's a few that could've easily gone in there instead of that one: - Kaim Argonar (Lost Odyssey) - Ryudo (Grandia 2) - Ashley Riot (Vagrant Story) - Vayne Aurelius (Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis) - Capell (Infinite Undiscovery) There, 5 characters with more personality, with a more interesting story arc (especially Kaim) than whatever KH does with Sora (or pretty much anything that isn't fan-service really). |

I played the games, he seemed to have clear reactions, opinions and informed decisions regarding everything going on around him. He changes and evolves considerably over the course of the series. True, he generally maintains his established traits, but it's not as if he never matures. |

Heck if anything the JRPG genre could use more of that. The thing is that Sora doesn't really grow as a character. Things happen to him, he gets more information, etc. but nothing in the games shows that he's actually grown as a person. Which, don't get me wrong, is perfectly fine for Kingdom Hearts where fanservice and ease of entry are the most important things. But Sora isn't really that interesting of a protagonist. If he was a silent one like the Suikoden protagonists of Breath Of Fire's Ryu, that wouldn't ammount much against him as he'ld just be the cheerful avatar of the player. |
