Couldn't disagree more. Having a cheerful, pleasant demeanor doesn't equal being bland. That's right, having that kind of demeanor doesn't equal being bland. Heck if anything the JRPG genre could use more of that. The thing is that Sora doesn't really grow as a character. Things happen to him, he gets more information, etc. but nothing in the games shows that he's actually grown as a person. Which, don't get me wrong, is perfectly fine for Kingdom Hearts where fanservice and ease of entry are the most important things. But Sora isn't really that interesting of a protagonist. If he was a silent one like the Suikoden protagonists of Breath Of Fire's Ryu, that wouldn't ammount much against him as he'ld just be the cheerful avatar of the player. I've never found Sora uninteresting at any point. He gets considerable character growth over the games, maybe in more nuanced ways, but by the end of KH2 he's far less happy go lucky. Still an upbeat and positive person at the end of the day, but I think the gravity of the situation he's in has dawned on him in a bigger way than it had at the end of KH1. Turning him into a silent protagonist would be a massive waste, and not just because Haley Joel Osment did such a good job with his voice acting. |

I'm probably the boards resident FFVII fan and I disagree with Cloud winning. He's not even the best FF protagonist. That reaks of "shit who should #1 be? Eh let's just pick someone popular."
And Yu from Persona 4? Again, awesome game, but he's a blank slate who you pick the dialogue for. There's no character there.
