2, like i'm sure many others will vote, is fantastic, while 3 is a close runner up. I just can't get into the first one and it takes a while for me to finish it if i start a playthrough
2 has the best levels and music, while 3 has the best level design and overworld

Easily 2, then 1, then 3.
Tropical Freeze could go between 1 and 3 if we're counting that one, too. Returns probably in last.
The trifecta of SNES games for me is Super Mario World, Mega Man X (which I often cite as my all-around favorite video game), and DKC2. I will play those three games on my deathbed, if possible.

Same for me, 2 then part 1, then 3.
I played part 2 the most, but I could never get into part 3.

It's just now dawning on me that of the original three games, 2 was the only one I didn't beat.

Honestly, while DKC2 is better, I think I've played 3 a lot more. At least the SNES versions.
The re-release of 3 on the GBA was so... disappointing, because they changed all the music. 2's port, at the very least, kept it faithful.
So... dammit, still voting for 2.

DKC2 is one of the greatest games of all time. So I'll definally go with that.
The other 2 are great games but I think I like 3 more than 1
DKC Returns was great homage to the original but the kremlings were sorly missing here.

The original trilogy is awesome. I'd say the second game improved the fun the most. The third game while incredibly good was marred by a bad release date near N64, having a less than great character in Kiddy Kong and generally a tad too gimicky at times.
Donkey Kong 64 was good as well, just too much to collect.
The new games feel like cheap imitations. Where's the Kremlings? Where's the vast stylized world's? Where's the animal buddies? Why can't I choose to play as Diddy? Sorry, but these weren't on the DKC level, but it was at least nice to see Nintendo FINALLY use DK after over a decade of just pissing around as a multiplayer Party game bitch.

I certainly enjoyed it (maybe not as much as Banjo-Kazooie, which is an all-time classic), but yeah, it got really tedious at times with all the shit you needed to get.

It's 2017, and to this day I still do not understand AT ALL how people put DKC 2 so much higher than the other two games. I mean, if you prefer it to the rest of the trilogy, that's fine, but how people can just say DKC 1 is OK, DKC 3 is decent but a letdown, but DKC 2 is "an all-time classic" and "SO much better" just doesn't gel with me.
The level design isn't that much different between the three games. In fact, I'd argue there's more bad (repetitive, uninspired and boring) levels in DKC 2 than the rest. There's some good ones, but sheesh...I hope whoever drew up the beehive levels was out of a job after that game. The one with the balloons in the lava could be won by holding forward all but maybe twice (so you could float under an enemy). Anything involving the birds, f*** those, I don't care if the music was any good on those stages (and I think the soundtrack from 2 also belongs in the good-not-great territory too).
For me, it's DKC 3. I liked the motif better than being all dark and dreary in 2 (though I also live in the country, so maybe that's just me). I thought the level designs were well done without being predictable or repetitive. I thought most of the gimmicks hit instead of missed (though some did whiff). I thought the soundtrack was good, having a "strong" ape was awesome, the graphics and boss fights were pretty good for the most part.

I recall only 2 bosses in that game being fun and not wanting me to chuck a controller across the room. I will say this, I think DKC3 gets more flack than it deserves. It's still a good game, it's just DKC 1 and 2 are flat out masterpieces. I LOVE the aesthetic of DKC3 and it was a breath of fresh air after how dark and gritty DKC2 was. I loved how the did the over-world map and at times would give you different worlds to do at once. Gives the player choices on what to tackle next. Some of the gimmick levels I'd be ok with, but it felt like it was less platforming and more "oh what's the gimmick going to be this time?", especially near the end. As for Kiddy Kong, yeah he was a step down from having both Diddy and Dixie, but he was not awful. I think people loved the dark feeling of 2, so seeing a kong baby as the new sidekick put a ton of people off and might have soured a few at the start. I also think there's some hit detection problems with this game. DKC 1 and 2 did not have the best when it came to hit direction, but I always feel like 3 was FAR worse. There's things DKC3 does that's good and other things, not so much. For a game that had to be made in a year and to have most of Rare's big players moving on to the Nintendo 64, it does a good job with what they had to work with. I bet the game could have been much better and could top 2 if they had more time. Sadly with it being the end of the SNES' lifespan, time was not on its side. DKC3 is not a awful game at all, it just had a tall order to fill and a short time to do it, and comes up short.

Love all three but I still have a soft spot for the original. I played the hell out of that game. I think I managed to get down to 54 minutes to complete 101%.

Donkey Kong Country 2 is the greatest game ever made, so of course it's the best DKC game. I actually prefer 3 to 1, as I feel like DKC1 just didn't age as well as the other two did. A lot of bonus rooms seem to rely on stuff like suicide jumps, and I hate the snow-world so much in the original.

I thought that Cranky would say something different when you completed it under an hour since he gloated about it. Sadly, that was not to be.

DKC is amazing, but short compared to the others and bonus areas just give extra lives instead of unlocking anything. DKC2 is master class to me. Pretty much perfect in every way. Art direction, music, level design, gameplay, challenge. DKC3 is really great but I thought the art style and especially music were big steps back. Everything else was still good though.
DKC Returns is good, and hard, and had a lot of variety in cool level gimmicks. But just didn't have the same feel, and the controls aren't as tight and responsive as the originals. I hated that all the unlocked levels just led to a weird dumb bonus level instead of a second final boss/ending like DKC2/3.
Haven't played Tropical Freeze yet

DKC3 is not a awful game at all, it just had a tall order to fill and a short time to do it, and comes up short. I recall just two bosses in 3 that I didn't like. I thought the second Baron K. Roolenstein fight was pretty convoluted to the point of not being fun, but the first one was still fun, and that sea urchin one was irritating for the hit detection issues you mentioned before, but that was about it. The one where you had to spit water from the elephant was a little lame but I wouldn't call that irritating. The snowman one that emulated the throwing gallery was alright (though they could've explained the mechanic where you could throw far away or close up, since the shooting gallery game never used that). The first two bosses (the barrel and spider) and KAOS were fine by me too. Like I said, the only ones I REALLY didn't like were the sea urchin and the K. Rool rematch. Compare that to DKC 2; First vulture fight is alright, the sword is OK, the big crocodile with the club might be the lamest boss in DKC history (long and boring with no variation in attacks and even a lame sound effect when he drops in that just screams "this boss fight was designed at 4 AM, it's called 'meeting a deadline' "), followed up with the f***ING WASP that's more irritating than ANYTHING in DKC 3; slow and boring with bad hit detection. Though, to be fair, it closed out with a fun vulture rematch and the best K. Rool battle of the DKC trilogy (64's was the best, but that's neither here nor there) and the best K. Rool rematch compared to 3. And DKC 2 was also pretty bad with the gimmicks. Again I argue, mute the music for levels like Bramble Scramble, Gusty's Glade and Screech's Sprint and those levels SUCK. And there's a decent amount of levels in DKC 2 have as little/nothing to do with platforming as DKC 3 does (the lava balloon level I mentioned in the previous post, Screech's Sprint, those rollercoaster levels, to name a few). And I argue that Kiddie was alright. It was just "off" not having a strong brute kong in 2 (though to be fair, the levels were built with that in mind, so it wasn't too bad). It just felt "right" having that again. If you prefer DKC 2, I totally get it. I could go on all day calling out flaws on DKC 1 and 3 myself. But this idea that 2 is this milestone of 2D platforming and 1 and 3 are miles off is just ridiculous to me. So many of the flaws people point out in 1 and 3 are not only present but as blatantly present in 2, but nobody holds 2 accountable to the extent they hold 1 and 3 accountable.

I don't think DKC2 is a perfect untouchable milestone, that game has a few issues. I think it's VERY hard to try to make a game as good if not better in a years time and with the B team at Rare. With that in mind, what they came out with was good. I honestly think with more time and Rare's A team worked on it, DKC3 could have blown 2 out of the water. It was just a victim of bad timing as everyone was moving on to the Nintendo 64. It was kind of doomed to not be as good as 2 from the start. I would say DKC3 edges out DKC1. 1 is not bad but there's enough things in 3 that I like better than in 1.
