Love all three but I still have a soft spot for the original. I played the hell out of that game. I think I managed to get down to 54 minutes to complete 101%. I thought that Cranky would say something different when you completed it under an hour since he gloated about it. Sadly, that was not to be. Cranky ain't admitting a damn thing about being wrong. He's a jerk.

DKC 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. I liked the first one a lot too.
DKC 3 came out around the time I was briefly out of playing videogames (until I got an N64 around '98). So I never played it much until getting a used copy a few years ago.
But the villains in DKC3 seemed much more generic, and the levels weren't as fun to play through as those in DKC 2. And Kiddy Kong was a terrible character to replace Diddy Kong with.
The only other DKC title I've played was DKC Returns for Wii. It was a total disappointment with no Kremlings and no water levels (which were my favorites in the old games and had some of the best music).

I will give Kiddy Kong some credit; having the team-up between him and Dixie (where one rides the shoulders of the other) have different effects was a neat touch. Kiddy being able to toss Dixie normally, while Dixie could barely get him airborne, was a nice touch. Plus, rolling with him off a cliff and onto water, timing it right, and skipping his bulky ass across the surface was fun, if a bit frustrating to get right.
Haaaaated his "death" sound-effect, though. Not quite "Baby Mario cry" levels, but damn close.

I didn't especially care that there were no Kremlings in Returns/Tropical Freeze. We had 3 games of them. I suspect it was an asset trade-off, since the Kremlins, despite appearing in a 2nd party title, were likely still property of Rare. DKCR was a genuine Nintendo-hard title on a platform where 1st party development was wholly geared toward ensuring no one ever got frustrated.
Tropical Freeze's Bopopolis gets my vote as not only the best DKC level in history, but also the one of the greatest levels in anything ever. Relative to DKC, it feels like what the entire series has been training you for, and once you actually get the rhythm, the remixed "Jungle Hi-Jinx" kicks into gear and you feel like a demi-god.
