The show starts in less than an hour on ABC, and I didn't see a thread for it, so here we are. Post your thoughts, predictions, analysis, and inevitable frustration with "La La Land" sweeping the awards.
Here are the nominees for some of the major awards:

its going La La Land, but i'm rooting for Hell or High Water
Director - Damien Chazelle Actor - Casey Affleck Actress - Emma Stone Supporting Actor - no vote Supporting Actress - Viola Davis
i think the two strongest categories after BP is Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Casey Affleck and Denzel were both terrific while Andrew Garfield and Ryan Gosling were both really good (haven't seen Captain Fantastic yet but i hear good things about Viggo's performance). Viola Davis stole Fences, and Octavia Spencer and Michelle Williams were both great (didn't see Moonlight or Lion).
for best actress, i thought Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman and Emma Stone (haven't seen the other two) all did a great job, but nothing that made me go "Wow, you really need to go see her performance". best actor, i've only seen Hell or High Water and Manchester, so i'm not going to vote since i've seen less than half, but of the two i've seen its the same feeling as the best actress category. i loved Jeff Bridges in Hell or High Water and think he did amazing, but its basically the same character we've seen him play several times before (i'd rather have seen Ben Foster in his place to be honest). i though Lucas Hedges did a really good job, but again it didn't make me go "wow, go see this".
best director, i think they're all on pretty much the same level, so nothing really jumps out.

If Meryl doesn't win, she'll be angry.
She's already pissed off because of Karl Lagerfeld.

This is the first time in a long time that I have seen none of the movies up for major awards, but I won't let a little thing like ignorance get in the way of some predictions:
BEST PICTURE: "Moonlight" - Everyone is expecting "La La Land" to win because there's nothing Hollywood loves more than a movie about how great Hollywood is, but I think this is the year - given the political climate and last year's hashtag controversy - that the Oscar voters pick a movie that's outside of their comfort zone.
BEST DIRECTOR: Damien Chazelle, "La La Land" - To make amends for "La La Land" not winning Best Picture, they'll grace Chazelle with Best Director and congratulate him for making the perfect Hollywood movie about how cool Hollywood is.
BEST ACTOR: Casey Affleck, "Manchester by the Sea" - It just feels like all of the other actors have some flaws in their roles (at least from what I've heard). Garfield and Gosling will have plenty of chances to win in the future, Mortensen and Washington have been heaped with enough praise in the past.
BEST ACTRESS: Emma Stone, "La La Land" - Again, since the Academy feels bad about not giving Best Actor to Gosling, they'll compensate by giving it to Stone.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mahershala Ali, "Moonlight" - I know nothing of the movie but it seems like he's the proverbial favorite to win.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Viola Davis, "Fences" - Like Leonardo DiCaprio with "The Revenant" or Martin Scorsese with "The Wolf of Wall Street", this is one of those lifetime achievement awards they hand out to someone who has been nominated in the past but may have gotten jobbed, so they'll make amends. Plus, she has that one scene where she blows snot bubbles and people love acting combined with leaky bodily fluids.

I'll go ahead and just admit that I'm tuning in purely for potential drama or live TV mess-ups as I've not seen any of the potential Best Picture candidates, but it should be fun!

I'm sure LaLa Land will win tonight and be remembered for a very long time as an all time classic like Chicago, The Broadway Melody and Gigi are.

If Meryl doesn't win, she'll be angry. She's already pissed off because of Karl Lagerfeld. Whoever wins Best Actress, I can all but guarantee that their speech will be just like Adele's at the Grammys, in that all they'll do is talk about how great Meryl Streep is - like Adele did for Beyonce - and how they're just humbled and honored to be nominated in the same category as such a titan of the industry.

Absolutely. But I think Argo and Birdman are going to have that following that will go on down the road. Amazing that when I think of great musicals, the ones that spring to mind are ones that didn't win Best Picture, West Side Story not withstanding...and possibly Oliver!.

I would replace Argo and Birdman with Spotlight and The King's Speech. But Argo made a shit ton of money and was a surprise box office hit in October which was the reason why it was the surprise Oscar Win. People are still saying "Argo f*** yourself" to this day. Birdman is just one of those movies that is to weird and surreal to not have a cult following and to be easily forgotten. Plus with how many more Superhero films are being made now it'll be revisited and brought up plenty of more times. It felt like nobody watched The Artist before the nomination or after it's win which is a shame but the 2011 Nominations were just weak and very forgettable. 2011 in film was also a weak year in film.

Why has Salma Hayek's English regressed so much?
She was just being interviewed on E! and she sounded less fluent than I've ever heard her before.
She didn't sound that way in Desperado, or even Wild Wild West.

I've only seen Hacksaw Ridge and La La Land. I'm going for La La Land. I really liked that one. The question is what wins best animated feature? I want Moana but I'm guessing Zootopia takes it.

Happy for Mahershala Ali. He seems like a genuinely good guy.
Also, La La Land is going to win everything and it's going to be the most gag-inducing shit ever. I'm hoping for a miracle and Hidden Figures wins best picture. But yeah, Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood.
