Basically this, references to normal animals are supposed to be "you didn't see that, move along"-tier. Not unlike the singular special stat in Gen 1.

But even then, that doesn't explain the stuff like teaching them moves from CDs, sending them via computers, let alone the ghosts, the sentient objects or the ones that are explicitly mentioned to have formerly been humans.
