I love any version of Kong. De Laurenitis included.
Hell I own TWO books with essays about the pop culture impact and greater philosophical themes of King Kong.

Although he will be too tall now. Would still like to see a Kong v Frankenstein film. The idea that Dr Frankenstein creates a monster out of various anilmal parts..

Please do the infamous 1977 King Kong! Is it infamous? Please tell me more. It was meant to be a big budget update of the classic, but instead of stop motion, they had a guy in a gorilla suit play Kong. And instead of an archeological search, the people who visit Skull Island want to drill for oil there. Another bad film is Kong vs. Mecha Kong, where an evil nation wants to use Kong to mine for radioactive material & fights their giant robot.

In fairness, the Rick Baker suit work is pretty great. I mean, it is Rick Baker, so that stands to reason.
It is the worst of the 3 versions, but it's still a decent movie. It was never going to touch '33; that's an all time classic film in general. And Peter Jackson's version technology and Andy Serkis pushed it over the top to being a good though flawed flick. The 77's biggest problem was taking it out of its setting and trying to do it 'in present day'. Kong works best as a period piece.
It'll be interesting to see if Skull Island works since it's set in the Seventies itself; now that that IS a period piece. Stoked to see them try.
I wouldn't call 77 bad though.
King Kong Lives? Now THAT was bad.

I prefer the 77 version over the Peter Jackson version (and the 33 original)!

King Kong Lives? Now THAT was bad. Speak of the devil... Kong 76 and Kong Lives! Also mentions the Nintendo vs. Universal Donkey Kong case.

The only King Kong movie I don't at least "like" was the Peter Jackson one. It was just goofy. The action was just so over the top I couldn't take it seriously and the cast and their portrayals of the characters just didn't do anything for me. I thought the suit was amazing in Kong '77, the film just lacked the sense of adventure the original one had and somehow, despite that fact it had the advantage of color, its backdrop was much more drab and uninteresting as well. And while I thought Kong in '77 and King Kong Lives were also the scariest ones they kind of botched having any sympathy with the title character. In the original there was a sort of underlying "They should have left him alone" thing, but they went too far with it in the '77 remake with the Jeff Bridges character, and they continued it with new characters in the sequel. I just laugh every time I think of the scene where Jeff Bridge's cheers him on on top of the World Trade Center. All those things considered, I felt bad when Kong died in the original, I cheered when he "died" in the '77 one, I just wish he had taken the Jeff Bridge's character with him.

In the Jackson one, I liked when Kong fought the T-Rexes, but that's about it. When they fight the bugs and the bugs are crawling all over them, they turn their automatic weapons on each other to "shoot the bugs." Really, those bullets should have gone right through the bugs and right through the guys there were crawling on as well!

I've never understood how they go to an island that has dinosaurs still living on it and they think the thing to exploit is the giant gorilla.

Another problem with the Jackson one is how long it is That was always my problem with it. They could've easily cut the boat stuff leading to the island and the island stuff itself in half. It felt like every crew member of the SS Venture were given their own sub-plot, which just wasn't needed. Why the hell do we need to go into these guys personalities, backstories and motivations when all of them are going to be gone from the story long before the climax?
