Hey guys, I'm doing a bit of research on how technology, especially modern technology, is affecting kids and their desire to play traditionally (and go outside, for that matter). Obviously none of us currently here grew up with smartphones or iPads, but many of us did grow up with stuff like Gameboy and all that.
Long story short, how do you guys feel about the way kids are growing up now? Tech obviously has pluses and minuses, but I don't have kids of my own so I don't really know how parents are tackling these challenges nowadays. I see a lot of my younger mom friends getting their kids iPads and even phones at a very young age, but I'm open-minded towards the positives as much as the criticisms. I just can't help but notice that I don't really see the kids in my neighborhood as much as I used to even 7-8 years ago. Granted many of them grew up, but there's still plenty of them around, they're just always seemingly inside. I have to wonder how much homework and the focus on extensive testing (we have ISTEP over here) has to do with it, too...

Personally I don't like it. I don't see kids playing outside as much as when I was a kid. And I don't like how easily they can access things without have to put any effort into it. On the flip side though, kids seem more involved in extracurricular activities than they were when I was a child.

One possible side effect I've read on is a condition which seems to be rising in correlation with early access to technology and that's having a hard time interpreting and visually understanding different facial expressions. Might want to look into that.
Personally? Eh. It's a little disheartening. I used to work at Disney as a stuffed animal and a certain number of kids would be glued to their tablet/games. I sorta get it...I used to carry around books/comics/toys...but that still requires a deal of having to utilize ones imagination.
My GF and I have theorized the arts will only get worse and worse while scientific fields and more logical professions will only advance. Which is kinda the picture usually painted, right? A better world. But a much colder one as well.

Personally I don't like it. I don't see kids playing outside as much as when I was a kid. anecdotally but I still see a bunch of kids playing outside in my neighborhood. Though thinking about it if I were growing up today I probably wouldn't hang out with my friends nearly as much... since... well what we usually did for at least part of our time together was play video games... and couch co-op has pretty much vanished entirely.

Growing up in a pre-video game, well pre-NES,and way before the internet we all played outside. It was rush home get your home work done. Then go outside and play until dinner time.
Not that long ago drove out to where I grew up,was showing some friends the area. Saw that the woods we always played in had been torn down to make a bigger bunkhouse for the summer camp that was in the area. Plus what use to be the huge dirt pit we played in is now a crappy sub-division.

I never agreed that kids are inside more due to tech. I think many kids would love to go outside more but their parents won't allow it due to a fear of crime, paedos and/or the increased amount of traffic.
That said I think a lot of parents do use ipads as electronic babysitters for toddlers which I can understand but don't agree with.

I'm willing to let children's play change because I don't have warm and fuzzy memories of rounding up my posse to play until we dropped. I was an indoor kid that had free time to entertain myself as I saw fit. When I was in middle school, I participated in a summer enrichment programs where my days were planned out alot like kid's days are plans out now. Most of the time I was too tired or rushed to get the most out of what I did. Maybe that's why I'm hyper aware of how little free time kids have today. I also think that's why you don't always see gaggles of kids outside playing.

My son plays on-line mode games with his friends. My daughter is always working on schoolwork or art. Or playing the new Zelda.
They're actually fine.

It's insane. Kids are inside so much that I can't even yell at them to get off my lawn. And the headphones and their damn hippity hop music!!!

My cousin learned an expensive lesson that today's kids do not play outside.
4 years ago she bought her 5 year old a huge and kick ass swingset/playground. Had all kinds of shit on it. I happened to be going down to visit. Got there right when her and her husband started putting it together. Took the three of us 4 hours to get it together. The thing cost a bit over 300 bucks.
Kids get home from school,5 year old and 10 year old. Look at it,go right inside and finish up their homework so they can have plenty of time to play their Wii and DS before dinner. I was down for a week and the youngest played on the swingset for maybe 15 minutes total that entire time.
