I am one month in to my chess career, and I am curious who else here plays? I've always been curious about chess, but was always intimidated by it. However we have an inmate that just happens to be the best chess player in the State, and on the days I work in his housing unit he's been teaching me.
As usual, once I find something of interest, I devour anything I can find on it. I've read up about Bobby Fischer's saga, and recently finished the documentary about world champion Magnus Carlsen.

Me and my Dad have a chess set setup in the dining room and just take turns making moves whenever we walk past the room. Game (albeit obviously someone wins and we reset so it has been more than one game - it's currently 72-49 in his favour actually) has been going for roughly 2 years now. Occasionally we'll both be there at the same time and we'll play the rest of the game from wherever we stand and very, very infrequently we get the chance to sit and play a full game but just having this long running chess game has been a source of great fun for us. Dunno what we're gonna do when I move out later this year. We'll have to find a way to keep it going.

So far the majority of my games have been against the computer on chess.com. While Wyoming has a chess association, there are no players near me. My first two days at work, I can play the inmates, at least.

In my life, I've played just frequently enough to forget every bit of how to play the next time around.

I enjoy a casual game of it but never had the time/interest to delve into the strategies and everything. Although I did look up one of the "how to win in x amount of moves" things and memorised it so I could annoy my dad.

I know how to play, but same with poker, just because I know how to play, does not mean I am good at it.

I love strategy games, especially turn based. I HATE chess. More of a checkers guy myself.

I only enjoy playing chess when there is an agreed upon speed rule. There's something about having to think and adjust among the chaos of a 15 second turn that makes the game pretty awesome. Feels much more like a true war game and not some painstakingly calculated set of variables.
I had a huge love/hate relationship with online chess in the 90's. You'd have some fun games and chats with people, then you'd get stuck playing people that just ran your moves against a chess simulator and laughed about how stoned they were. The best part was watching these people face up against eachother in tournaments because they'd always make the perfect move within 10 seconds and play... well, like computers set on Chestmaster against eachother.

My son was about 8 or 9 when he decided to do something as an after school activity with his friends, so he chose the chess club. He'd tell me how the teacher remarked at how good he was, so I asked him to teach me so we can play. He was a natural. Kinda wish he stuck with it, but he got interested with online gaming and that became his fun.

I've played a lot, but I'm not the kind of person to sit there and come up with strategies, so I usually move without thinking everything through. Good thing I can click undo on the computer. Currently undefeated at 236 - 0.
