Hemsworth thought he was fired with Thor Civil War absence

As with many actors populating the MCU, Chris Hemsworth didn’t really become a huge star until given the big Marvel stage to showcase his talents on. While Hemsworth had already appeared in a few notable projects in Hollywood, it’s fair to say that when he was cast as Thor, quite a few people were unfamiliar with what he might bring to the role. Thankfully, as has proven to be the case with so many MCU casting decisions, Hemsworth proved to be a great choice, taking the Thor character itself to new heights of worldwide fame.
Hemsworth’s first theatrical outing as Thor would go on to gross an impressive $449 million worldwide on a budget of $150 million, and he would subsequently return to the role for 2013 sequel Thor: The Dark World. That film ended up making its predecessor’s large haul look small by comparison, earning over $644 million worldwide on an only slightly higher budget of $170 million. Hemsworth would of course also play a large part in the success of both The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
With all that in mind, one would assume that Hemsworth’s place within the ever-expanding MCU is quite secure at this point, and the part of Thor will be his until he no longer wishes to continue working with Marvel Studios. Oddly enough though, it seems that Hemsworth himself made no such assumptions, revealing in a new interview with EW that he initially thought his exclusion from Captain America: Civil War meant that he was being fired. “I was like, ‘What? Are we being fired?’ Marvel quickly reassured us, ‘No you guys have got your own journey going on, and in order for that to work you can’t be a part of this one.’ Look, it turned out just perfect because we got to do a whole different kind of thing we wouldn’t have able to do otherwise.”

That separate journey for Thor and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) will of course take place in this fall’s MCU entry Thor: Ragnarok, Hemsworth’s third solo adventure as the Asgardian warrior. Well, solo in the sense that Thor’s name is in the title, and he’s the clear focus of the plot. The days of one-hero solo movies seem to be largely behind the MCU at this juncture.
While it’s likely to strike many as odd that Hemsworth would ever consider himself on the chopping block with Marvel, it just goes to show that not even the biggest stars are 100% sure of what their future holds. The MCU operation is a big machine after all, and will surely continue operating long after Hemsworth eventually does decide to hang up Mjolnir and call it a day. Thankfully though, that day doesn’t seem like it’ll be anytime soon.
