After watching (and enjoying) a whole bunch of MLP:FIM episodes, it made me wonder if anyone has seen the original My Little Pony cartoon from the 80s. From what I've heard and some of the clips i've seen, it's more action-oriented and closer in tone to the other Hasbro cartoons of the era than one would think (remember, this WAS the era of cutesy stuff like Smurfs or Get Along Gang). I understand it has almost NOTHING to do with the current MLP but it would still be interesting to see (surprised Hasbro hasnt put it up on their roku channel).

I'm surprised that you haven't seen it, even though you're the same age as me. While it wasn't as big of a deal as Transformers or GI Joes, it was around long enough for our generation to see it enough. As you mentioned, it wasn't a cute or funny cartoon. And that's probably why I watched it, as opposed to some other shows that may have been geared toward girls.

Actually, here's some clips of the original MLP i was able to find: Wow, that second clip is a lot darker then anything I remember. If it wasn't for the talking horses I would've assumed it came from something like "Dungeons and Dragons" instead.

In general, the villain from the first TV special (where the second clip is from), Tirek, would not feel out of place in a fantasy series for boys. His design, that voice...no wonder he is in my Top Ten Animated Series Villains of the 1980s list. For more Tirek goodness, see this one:

And an interesting factoid was that My Little Pony was going to be tied into the 80s "Hasbro-verse" (Transformers, GI Joe, Inhumanoids, Jem, C.O.P.S.). Buzz Dixon talked about writing a scene in the 80s MLP movie that would have involved one of the ponies flying by Shipwreck, who would have been drinking from an "amber bottle", and asking him for help. After the pony flew away, Shipwreck would have thrown down the bottle, put his hat over his heart, and recite some oath. Sunbow said something to the effect of "Very cute. No" when he suggested that scene.

I've heard that some of the Joe movie's music was ripped from MLP (it also used music from TF G1 as well - all by Robert Walsh and Johnny Douglas), after its cinematic release & rock soundtrack were cancelled in the wake of TF's poor box office showing. I've never known what piece(s), though, as I was also a kid of the '80s who avoided MLP (and Jem.....hell, and TF G1).
