Seriously, that term is just... weird. I really don't get the link between one's rear end and being uptight. The first time I heard it, I thought it was a bizarre attempt at making a PC version using "gay" as an insult and rolled my eyes at it, but it's apparently not the case. So what gives?

I remember a professor back in college went on a tangent about it being something like: There is a link between children that try to manage their bowel movements and them being very meticulous and anal retentive in their work later in life.
no clue if that was true or just the his wacky rant after smoking some bad stuff the night before

Classic Freudian psychoanalysis. He also developed the theory that children who don't try to manage their bowel movements and just let it drop where it may tend to develop artistic, overtly emotional, abrasive, careless, rebellious traits as they reach maturity.

It's not a widely accepted theory anymore, like a lot of Freudian stuff, but it stuck around in the culture, being anally retentive, anal for short, meaning obsessing over details.

On the plus side, at least we got this out of it all:

Guess that makes sense. Well, not Freud's theory, but the origin of the saying at least. Thanks for the help, everyone!
