Huge Scorsese fan, I've seen all his features except Boxcar Berth, Hugo and Silence. Of his rock documentaries, I've only seen the one on George Harrison. But yeah, I love his work. Even New York, New York, probably the lesser of all his feature films, but according to Scorsese one his most personal films. His first film I watched was Goodfellas when it came on TV when I was 9 years old. Even on network tv cut, the opening scene's violence blew me away. It also helped me understand Goodfeathers.

Love the work he does bringing world cinema to this country. The second volume of his Criterion picks comes out in May and I'm over the moon that I managed to get all 3 sets of his Polish cinema project from Milestone Films.
Of his own incredible works, I've always thought The Last Temptation of Christ is the one people sleep on.

While The Departed is a fantastic film, I always found it insulting that he won an Oscar for that when it clearly isn't his best film. Taxi Driver, Last Temptation of Christ, Raging Bull, Casino, The Aviator, Gangs of New York, and Goodfellas were all million times better than The Departed. He should've won an Academy Award for at least these way before The Departed.

He's good, but he's been sleeping walking a lot since people know him as the "say f*** a lot" director. That's not to say he hasn't had good to great films, I just personally find some of his later ones to not measure up to most of his earlier stuff in terms of just having it resonate with you. A lot of times now it comes off as farce, like he's trying too hard; "Shutter Island" or "The Wolf of Wall Street". Other times he hinders the tone with what I consider bad casting decisions, that mostly in Leonardo DiCaprio. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I don't think he's that good of an actor and a lot of times a bad fit for the movie; "Gangs of New York" and "The Aviator".
That being said, I'm very pumped to watch Silence this weekend. Not many mainstream directors would take something like this nowadays, especially something that is not only religious but mostly something that most people aren't very familiar with. And most importantly, I've become an Andrew Garfield fan... I'm hoping he replaces Leo in terms of Scorsese's gushing.
