This question has been on my mind since before my computer started going through some issues. Now that I had another one that I could use, the thread that I had wanted to start had come back.
Anyway, why is it that in MMPR that the Dragonzord was more like a robot that didn't need to be controlled and the Green Ranger was more often than not out of the zord? I could count on one hand when he actually went inside it because I remember an episode when he actually went into it.

Only time he went into it to my recolection is in Green Candle prt 2.
And also why he chose not to IMO was because the flute granted him the ability to fight on two fronts something not affored to the other rangers and also I think the Dragonzord was a bit sentient in a way but never fleshed out to its full potential...atleast not untill TimeForce with the Q-rex.

I'm not sure, but just a guess: lack of footage from the super sentai show that showed footage of green ranger in the dragonzord?

Once he became good, he was in the Dragonzord cockpit more. There was probably more footage of him on the shoulder so if they wanted more options of the Dragonzord doing cool stuff, they had to use that.

If you could pilot it remotely why put yourself in harms way by climbing inside of it?

Yeah, I think Burai was in the cockpit of Dragon Caesar just once, and it was right before he died.

Dragonzord was remotely operated by the Dragonflute.

Dragonzord was remotely operated by the Dragonflute. how did he play that flute when his mouth is covered by his helmet, anyway?

In the original Sentai, the Guardian Beasts aka Zords were somewhat sentient, so he didn't need to pilot it.

In the original Sentai, the Guardian Beasts aka Zords were somewhat sentient, so he didn't need to pilot it. Instead of Zordon, their boss was the combined megazord, who was basically God. His sword was called Godhorn, and that's f***ing cool. Dragonzord was remotely operated by the Dragonflute. how did he play that flute when his mouth is covered by his helmet, anyway? With style.
