Greetings, Off Topic....I don't venture here often but I wanted to swing through and talk about this. Last month a video went viral of 3 twenty something's from Canada traveling close to 500 miles to a McDonalds in the Middle of No Where, WV because it was one of two locations still selling Pizza. (some NSFW language) Pretty fun stuff. Anyway, this past weekend the wife & I...having a weekend kid free....were looking for something to do. She, being 6 years younger than me, only vaguely remembered McDonalds pizza. Having seen the video...AND considering the McDonalds featured is only about an hour and change from our house...she thought it'd be cool to give that a try. So off we went... I talked to one of the ladies working and she said; "Business has been through the ROOF. They put the Taco Bell in up the road and business had been slow, but then that video happened and it's been crazy. We've had people from all over the country driving in, from out of country...we had people from London call asking about pizza." So, basically, if you EVER find yourself feeling the need for adventure, head to Spencer, WV and have some pizza. Seriously, it's actually really really good and it's cheap! 90's food item/90's prices.

I remember having that on a road trip as a kid. I also remember the fajitas.
I miss the sweet chili chicken McWrap.

Wish I could, that's pretty kickass. I've always heard good things about the pizza, just that it was difficult on the workers and locations, since obviously pizza has different preparation needs than sandwiches and fried stuff.

The reason it didn't last was because McDonalds corporate figured out that a pizza that takes about 11 minutes to prepare and cook kinda went against the notion of 'fast food.' The owner of this particular location (he also owns the other location that still sells it too) kept it around for whatever reason. The lady I talked to that day said that it was always a good seller but had, obviously, been on a completely other level since that video went viral. Hell, the day my wife & I were there they had ANOTHER group of Canadians in the restaurant earlier in the day. According to her "they brought their kids and drove for 3 days just for pizza." So, yeah, shit has been wild there lately.

I've been to Spencer a few times (for work) but never ate at the McDonald's. Fun fact about Spencer: there used to be an infamous insane asylum in the town which abused and experimented on it's patients. Lots of them are buried there in unmarked graves. After they tore it down they built a Wal-Mart (which would almost certainly have to be haunted) on the property.

Yup, pretty much this (and that people weren't willing to wait). That said, always heard that it lasted longer on the menu in Canada because Canadians were willing to wait (and I don't know if they did this in the US, but I distinctly remember them doing table service for the pizza here). Also, I love when franchises keep something on the menu or doing a unique item.

Nothing quite screams 'clearout' more than mid and end of week discounts. This is oddly fascinating story, especially since the actual pizza itself looks like something you'd order from a chippie at 2am when all the proper pizza shops are closed.

Holy crap, dude in the eagle shirt... that shirt couldn't get more American if it was an apple pie dropping bad schools bombs on the band Aerosmith.
Cool video though. I couldn't imagine travelling three hundred miles for a pizza, but it's the journey that's more important than the destination.

I grew up about 35 minutes from Spencer and I clearly remember that asylum before they tore it down. And, oh yeah, that Walmart is totally haunted.

I remember these when I was a kid. I don't remember which McDonalds had them in Happy Meal form (wasn't my local one), but there was a McDonalds in one of the "next towns over" that had it and I never turned down the shot to try it. I remember thinking they were pretty damn good. Plus, back then, pizza was THE food. Like I was gonna get a burger over a pizza, c'mon (something I don't mind doing now, especially if we're talking Freddy's or Five Guys).

I remember them from back in the day. They tasted like a less bready DiGiornio. Keep in mind this was before DiGiorno's came out so for pizzas you had 3 mainstream choices, you had the main chains like pizza hut, dominos, etc. You had cardboard like from Chucky Cheese/Peter Pipper's, and frozen like Tony's or Tortinos. With that in mind, the McPizza was quite good.

McDonald's pizza was great. Though the one in that pic looks more like Pizza Hut's pan pizza than what I remember from McD's.
As previously mentioned, they were sort of like DiGiorno's rising crust pizzas. But they tasted much better.
