I was trying to think of something to say here, because I have a lot of "duh" moments so I couldn't easily remember one... but the Barry Manilow subject reminded me.
I re-watched Mrs. Doubtfire for the first time in about twenty years a few months ago and was surprised that Frank and Daniel were a gay couple. I can't remember what I thought about them at the time that it was first released, but yeah. I dunno if that's just me being dumb or a product of how sheltered I was as a kid, haha.

I've been trying to convince my gf of this for years. LOOK TO THE MONKEYS, PEOPLE! Depends. If it's a bundle, getting it off of the bundle ends up tearing the stem portion like half the time, anyway, so it becomes easier to open it up. Yeah, when they're ripe bananas will tear naturally at the stem when you pull them off the bunch. If you ask me, it's the monkeys that are doing it backwards. I never knew it was "daylight saving time" and not "daylight savings time" until about 10 years ago. Everyone I know says "savings." The only time I hear "saving" is on TV. And people will flip out about it, like "It's 'saving' not 'savings' you idiot!" As if it's really that big a deal. I'm a bit ashamed at how long it took me to figure out that David Johansen and Buster Poindexter were the same guy.

I didn't watch American Pie until 2012 at the age of 20. I'm sure the majority of my friends saw it when it came out.

Similarly, Married...with Children is MUCH dirtier when you watch it as an adult.

I thought a machete was a type of gun for years, because I'd only heard it in some Eminem lyrics. I remember feeling so dim when that finally clicked.
Another one from when I was younger, I didn't know you could really order food over the phone. I thought it was a thing people did on TV or in films, because my parents never ordered takeaways. My mind was totally blown when I was at a friend's house and her dad rang to order a Chinese.

I always thought Wolverine was just a name for a female wolf. I never realized it was an actual separate animal until a few years ago.

Hugh Morris = humorous
Add me to the people about the banana peeling, however it's because of those disgusting little string things. Peeling it from the bottom helps keep those entirely off.
To add onto the Washington Redskins thing, I worked with a girl who insisted that Washington DC was in the state of Washington. I'd love for her to explain our nation's history.
The Kay Jewelers thing...yeah only learned about that in this thread. To be fair, I don't pay attention to commercials much.

I didn't know ducks could swim under water until age 30. I'd seen them fly and swim on top of water but I was at the pier watching ducks one day and this duck just went under water. My mind was blown - and I'd grown up around ducks all my life. I was more flabbergasted that I didn't notice it sooner than the actual occurrence of the thing.
The "I believe I requested the hand job" joke in Wayne's World. I watched it a lot as a kid and then re-watched a few years ago and couldn't believe I missed it. They may have also cut it out of the TV version. I dunno.

A couple of years ago, I only realized it's "The Flintstones" and not "The Flinstones". As a man who loves terrible puns, how did I not notice this? You've just opened my eyes. 😮

In UK soap opera Eastenders, the local pub is called The Queen Victoria. The location for Eastenders is a street called Albert Square.
I didn't realise the Albert/Victoria connection until Eastenders had been on for a good 15 years...

Mine is easy. I didn't know the singer of Fast Car, Tracy Chapman was a girl. I always thought Chapman was a guy.

I was 35 before I realized that the easiest and best way to peel a banana was from the "bottom".And I had been eating at least 5 nanners a week for 3 decades straight . I learned that last year, thanks to Mister PigwellSometimes I still get the alphabet wrong and think it goes LNMOP instead of the correct LMNOP, and that is as a life long 37 year old native english speaker. Sounds more like an occasional flub than you only learning it late in life. I didn't watch American Pie until 2012 at the age of 20. I'm sure the majority of my friends saw it when it came out. Considering you were about 8 years old when the movie came out, you're forgiven.

I didn't know segue was pronounced segway until last year. I thought they were just similar words that meant the same thing.

I too thought that about the Washington Redskins. But I realized my mistake about a year ago. I'm not much of a sports guy. I think my logic was that native Americans are more associated in my mind with the western part of the country so it made more sense that a football team would have said mascot in Washington state than in D.C.
I also do not understand most of the rules in football and while I mostly understand baseball I still don't understand when it is OK to steal a base.
I also didn't realize it was "Flintstones" for a good while but I was a kid when I figured it out. I think I called them the "Frinstones". It's obvious really since most of the gags on the show are rock puns.
This banana thing is news to me.
One that my mother revealed to us years ago is that when she was young she used to think that Spain was in South America. Her thinking was that they speak Spanish in South America so surely that must be where Spain was.

That therapy isn't just "Tell me about your mother," and that exercise and proper sleep really can help with depression and anxiety and is not just something people say to get you to do them.
