David Letterman’s mother Dorothy Mengering, who made regular appearances on his late night television show, reportedly died on Tuesday. The soft-spoken woman was a staple of the “Late Show with David Letterman,” appearing in segments via satellite on from her Indiana kitchen. She died at at the age of 95, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Mengering first appeared on the show during the 1994 Winter Olympics and became a fan favorite for her humble and jocular presence. “After Lillehammer, I couldn’t believe how it all took off,” she told The New York Times in 1996. “I think it’s about the idea of mom and of a family. People are eager for families to be like they used to be.” Grew up watching her.

Back when I was younger and watched Letterman every night, the segments with his mom were always my favorite thing on the show. She seemed like a wonderful lady and mother.

I watched Letterman regularly from 1994-96, and she always seemed like a sweet, decent, kindly woman....just a nice person in general. Sad news.

I was a massive Letterman fan as a kid and I have fond memories of all the interactions with his mom.
RIP.
