N.W.A., Björk, Wu-Tang Clan, Josh Groban, Indigo Girls, Velvet Underground, Miles Davis, Phish, Judas Priest, Sublime, The Ramones, The Stooges and even Bob Marley and Marilyn Manson are pretty big artist who never had Top 40 hits in the US. Which are your underappreciated (at least charts wise) artist?

Led Zeppelin did not have a top 40 hit in their home country until a remix of Whole Lotta Love in 1997.

They've had 23 songs that have hit the Top 40. EDIT: I stand corrected.

They've had 23 songs that have hit the Top 40. The highest they ever hit was 48 with "No Excuses."

The OP did ask for US Top 40. It is pretty surprising they never broke the top 40 with the amount of songs that got so much radio airplay in the 90s.

Anyone else ever grow a little suspicious of the Billboard charts? Is "Happy" really the most popular song for a year straight?

It's crazy that a song had to be sold as a single in order to be a "hit." It really changes music history in a way.

Which I always find a bit strange really. They were fine with releasing singles in other parts of the world, just not in the U.K. I know they considered themselves more of an "albums band" but even so, several tracks could have worked as single releases. Like Stairway. It was so sought after for a time that even cover versions of the song performed well in the charts. (I think the highest-charting version of it is still the Rolf Harris version, which is both sad and funny at the same time). And of course there was Whole Lotta Love which (the CCS version anyway) was famously used for the opening titles of Top of the Pops for years. They could have released that and it would have coasted to #1. But on their choice (or that of their record company) it wasn't to be.

I don't understand how those 'hits' are ranked, given that Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Coming' was a major hit BITD, and Marilyn Manson was very, very popular when its cover of "Sweet Dreams" caught on (and especially once the band followed up that single by releasing Antichrist Superstar).

Swans have never been a top 40 band (for obvious reasons) but I defy you to name a band whose influence is stretched as far and wide.

Yeah. I agree. Sublime and Marilyn Manson and Judas Preist and Bob Marley all had hits. The original post defines hits under a certain pretext, and in that case, it's accurate. But those folks had hits (or at least one). When I see the thread title, I think of Phish and--to a slight degree--The Grateful Dead, and Wu Tang and Indigo Girls and the like. Important and huge artists that missed mainstream song recognition with that one huge memorable hit or series of hits. (Even if there are some of us who can name several songs by those artists. I'm just thinking general population song recognition.)

If I'm not mistaken a major factor in billboard ranking is radio airplay. You'd have to assume it will be mega mainstream inoffensive pop

You'd have to assume it will be mega mainstream inoffensive pop Inoffensive is indeed the right word because a lot of mainstream pop/adult contemporary stations are basically played as background noise for restaurants, dentist offices, grocery stores, clothing stores etc so the music needs to be bland and forgettable as possible.
