It was way before my time. I could ask a million other forums, but I will let FAN handle this one!

Pretty much a Pepsi clone...which sucked because I wasn't a fan of Pepsi.
Naturally it flopped tremendously and they reverted back to the original formula as "Coke Classic". New Coke did live on for a while in obscurity though.

Pretty much. It was just a sweeter taste than original Coke. I was in high school during the Cola Wars. One of the teachers at school (Social Studies) did an actual taste test to see if anyone could really tell the difference between Coke and Pespsi (aka. the "Pepsi Challenge"). Out of a class of 30, I was one of two who could tell.

A stale Pepsi. I had a business teacher who posed this question. Was new come the biggest marketing failure, or the greatest long term idea ever?. The thought was they figured either they would seek the same and nothing lost our fall completely that when bringing back the original made people flock back and draw bigger numbers?. The fact is returning to classic bright then a bigger market share than they had before the switch.

I did, but they still spent a lot of money on the launch, restocking, etc, that could not have been cheap. I think it was more they misread the market, but were able to skillfully recover from it, that it wasn't always the plan. I don't think it's like the Tab experiment, which reportedly did involve them intentionally killing a market to f*** Pepsi over, even though it cost Coca Cola, too.

Crap.
It wasn't undrinkable, but definitely not as good as the Classic formula, or, for that matter, Pepsi.

I don't disagree it was just a point I have always find very interesting.

Pepsi, without that feeling of "sticking to your teeth" Coke has.

Was new come the biggest marketing failure, or the greatest long term idea ever? I remember the question coming up during an interview, and Coca-Cola's president Donald Keough answered this speculation by saying "We're not that dumb, and we're not that smart."

I remember it, but not the taste. I was reading an interesting article awhile back that stated that Coke would have been fine if they hadn't pulled the original formula completely and they did coexist for awhile

Flat Pepsi. If you'd left the cap off a Pepsi for bout an hour, that.

It does remind me slightly of when Mountain Dew was sponsoring the WWE and they had the bottles on the desk for like a month... then finally they decided someone had to drink it. So Lawler took a big sip of it and made a face like it was the most god awful thing he'd ever tasted.

As someone who can't stand Coke, it had to taste better than "classic".

Something that I've always wondered . . . on the New Coke can it just says "Coke". I remember after this was all done and over with the cans said "Coke" on one side and had the old "Coca-Cola" logo on the other side. Did they create the "Coke" logo for New Coke or was it something that existed before it? I don't think they use the "Coke" logo anymore but am not certain.
