In the last two days, I've seen two channels being advertised on YouTube's own ad rolls and unsurprisingly, they were for some of the most obnoxious bottom-of-the-barrel type of channels. Okay, maybe that's a little bit harsh, at least they weren't the "douchebaggery disguised as pranks/social experiments" kind but they were only one step above that:
One was for some would be MLG team channel with people playing what I presume to be either a Call of Duty or Battlefield game and some typical "360 no scope" bullshit with some really shitty rap in the background where the rapper (who may or may not have been the channel owner as the voice was very similar) was trying really hard to sound tough while noticeably struggling to improvise lyrics.
The other was one of those clickbait "ALL CAPS TITLE TRY NOT TO WHATEVER CHALLENGE" ones where everything about the host feels artificial (and yes, the thumbnails in the spot under the video did contain the YouTuber pulling annoying faces, arrows pointing out the bleeding obvious and smileys. Oh and it was a full video rather than a trailer or a clip or something so you have to skip it manually if you don't want to watch the whole thing.
So is this seriously becoming a thing that we're gonna have to put up with now? I don't mind ads before or even during a video, you gotta make a living. Hell, I don't even mind YouTube putting ads on videos that aren't monetized because, again, maintaining this shit ain't free. And I actually like the idea of giving channels the opportunity to advertise themselves and possibly extend their audience (although I think this should be reserved for smaller channels are larger ones already get way more exposure than they need). But could we not make it a platform for the sort of channels I am actively avoiding?
