"You're going to end up applying restraints. Don't say security officer, it sounds douchey. Don't talk to the patients unless directed by a nurse. Have fun!" It's a running joke at my job because we do hospital security. I train people, but not just for where I work but for the whole company. Our site essentially breaks every rule we have in training. In training we tell you we will hold patients, but the nurses apply restraints and never us. Unfortunately when a patient is throwing punches we don't have time to delegate so we end up doing it. We give a big speech about how we're security "officers" and not security guards because our job requires special training and our hiring process is ruthless (which is true), but then the second a newbie says it we shut it down because it sounds really goddamn obnoxious and gives people the impression we think we're cops. The third thing is because so much of our model is based on verbal deescalation, but on the mental health unit of the particular facility I work at we're not allowed to talk unless we're told to. So of course the big joke now is that the site training should consist of us telling people everything they've learned is wrong and then just walking out of the room. Do I know you. You just described what i go through to a "T". If you add being constantly understaffed, managed by someone who is severely not qualified for their position as account manager, and finding that dealing with hosptital staff can be worst than the patients and the visitors, than we must be the same person. Funny story: I took the night off to go to a wrestling show (Featuring Ryback and Abyss!) and while I was gone my team talked a jumper down off the parkade roof. My team has the least experienced people in the company, and from what the nurses tell me they did an amazing job of talking to her, connecting with her and getting her to come into the hospital to seek help. My management is actually awesome. They were there in an hour (after picking me up at home) to go see them, make sure everyone was okay, remind them of our in house counselling service and take over for them for a little while so they could all take a break and clear their heads. I couldn't work for a better company. But yeah, the staff is totally a bigger problem than the other people. Right there with you on that one.

That is a situation where thing go the way they are supposed to go. But that's where your situation an my situation go in a different direction. We can have times where our officers can pull off some miracles while being short staffed and all hell breaking lose over around the hospital. What i've experienced is people trying to find a way to use a situation to their advantage. Real snake stuff with hospital administration to different departments. People are always trying to find something to cover up their BS. Even when shit goes well.

"Don't make plans unless you have an approved personal/vacation day."
Shoot, they'll tell us on a Tuesday we're be off that Friday. I'll tell them one or two things:
1) "Tell me when I clock out Thursday."
2) "Do we work tomorrow? Let's worry about that first."
Plans can change. Half the shift gets pissed when they're told that, then Thursday comes and they find out we're working Friday after all.

One I heard on Exile On Badstreet (the first Continental episode, talking about how Mr. Wrestling II was playing a cranky old guy), when Beau James was talking to Jim White (Lawler's tag partner way back when). Jim told him, "When you get to the point where you're saying 'These kids today don't know', 'back in my day' or anything like that...that's a sign that you made it."
