Just saw only the lab cat segment. WHOSE IDEA WAS THIS AND WHAT WERE THEY SMOKING?!!?
That actually was Disney-like in its animation. No. PG version of Plague Dogs/Watership Down, more like!!!

I had the book as a kid and it confused the holy hell out of me Seeing a Garfield book with the line "they kicked ass" was bizzare. And you're lucky they didnt adapt "Primal Self". {Spoiler}A realistic looking Garfield is possessed by a demonic cat. The last thing we see is the possessed Garfield about to claw his owner (an elderly woman) to death.

A couple of years ago I stumbled onto the lab cat segment on YouTube, and it kind of blew my mind because I had spent years thinking I might have dreamt that whole thing; I had seen it on TV as a very little kid, always remembered it being attached to a Garfield show, but never had any idea what the name of the special or the context of it was.

All I have to say is, That one life with the piano.. You know the one, Gets me every time. That story is incredibly sad. As someone who's lived with pets, it really hits home. There truly is a high cost to having a pet, and that cost has nothing to do with money.

Yeah, that special f***ed with me as a kid. I would go through this phase where I would think the whole special was a weird dream. Then I'd find the VHS I had it taped on, watch it again, and it'd screw with me even more.

Stuff like Nine Lives and the Christmas Specials almost make the typical strip seem worse, because it really shows the quality Davis could have probably gotten consistently if actually put effort into writing Garfield.
Maybe he felt that would have been redundant by the time the TV series came about, but still its a interesting if frustrating what if.

So Davis did ALL the stories? No guest artists/animators for each segment?

So Davis did ALL the stories? No guest artists/animators for each segment? I was under the impression that, with the original comic, Davis allowed other cartoonists to work with the material and take it in whatever direction they pleased; not sure how/if this translated on the TV special.

Yeah, it kind of seemed moreso with the TV show...like the Legends of the Dark Knight BTAS episode (even moreso, as I think that was all Bruce Timm...)
