Bale: Not interested in playing another superhero role

Playing a superhero may not be as hard as being one - but it is still pretty tough. Stunt doubles can only go so far, and the workout routines needed to get ready for such a role are notoriously difficult. However, the challenged presented by these heroic roles are not enough to scare off some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Everyone from Kurt Russell to Amy Adams have starred in a superhero film in the last five years, and Christian Bale garnered critical praise for his take on Batman. However, if the actor was ever asked to take on another superhero role for Marvel or whatnot, Bale says he’s definitely not interested.

Recently, Collider (via Batman News) was able to speak with Bale while the actor promoted his new film The Promise. It was there the site asked the leading man if he’d be willing to do another superhero film in the future. Here’s what the actor had to say:


“No, I’m not interested in doing that. I’ve never seen — I’m trying to think if that’s correct, I think I’m actually correct, I can’t remember a single superhero film that I’ve ever watched. Apart from the ones I made and like, the Christopher Reeve Superman films.”

Bale then commented further on Richard Donner’s take of Superman. “Yes, I love those. Other than that, no I’ve never seen anything,” he explained.

In the past, Bale has stressed his familiarity with comic book movies was shallow at best. Back in 2014, the actor confessed he had never seen another film of the genre. “I understand they… set a different tone,” he said about the films in comparison to The Dark Knight trilogy.

I can't really think of anyone he'd be a good fit for at this point, and he has likely f***ed up his body so much by now, it'd be a lot of effort for what could probably be a role someone else would be better for.

After going from the Machinist to the Batman stuff, I would not want to do anything like that ever again, if I were him.

Bit of a stretch..a lot of the internet and Batman fans wanted him as Bats. Especially after American Paycho and Equilibrium.

If the powers that be didn't drop a monumental amount of cash on his doorstep to do Superman vs Batman, I don't see them offering him a deal he'd be interested in now. More Batman movies would've been awesome but it is what it is.

No one gives a f*** that Anna Kendrick would play Robin if she was asked to. If they bring it up without you setting them up, sure, you have a story. Otherwise, shut your hack mouth up.

I don't blame him one bit.

With rare exceptions, the films in that genre all just run together in one big blur. Once you've seen one, you've kinda seem them all - again a few outstanding exceptions.

I know that's true of a lot of genres, but based on the frequency and consistency that they've been dropping them in the past ten years or so, it seems way worse with this genre.

The guy f***ed up his spine from doing something like American Hustle. A movie where the actors pretty much had almost complete creative control in there characters in how they look, dress, and act as long they don't say anything that strays from the plot.

Exactly this. The body transformation he went through between these roles is crazy and I believe it is said he wanted to lose more weight for the Machinist but they told him no and rightfully so.

Bale did a great job as Batman and he can step away knowing he did well.

Seriously. So sick of click bate non stories. Actor itching reprise role! Actual quote: I don't know, I guess maybe, but it would depend on a lot of factors. Actress confirms fan theory to be true Actual quote: Never heard that one before, but I suppose it could be possible. Etc.


On topic, love me some Christian Bale. But I can't really think of any super role he'd be perfect for, other than maybe Dr. Strange, which of course has already been filled. Rather see him go more of a Crispin Glover route with creepy supporting characters.
