Anyone else feel like they would like to smack whoever came up with that phrase? The customers I deal with are typically whiny, rude, impatient, and dishonest to boot. They are also incredibly spoiled and don't appreciate how good they have it.

I hate that phrase, working at a thrift store, and having customers switch tags on a coach purse and try and go up to the check outs thinking they will ring up that purse for 99 cents...idiots.

Correction: The rude customers are always right. The cashier will gladly take 10 minutes explaining to the polite customers why they are wrong.

The customers that give us a hard time are the ones we bend over backwards for while the ones who don't give us trouble are the ones we put on the back burner. Its so backward it makes my head spin.

To quote Ben Affleck "The customer's always an asshole!" Yeah, you want to learn to truly hate people? Work retail for a few years.

I always find most customers to be pleasant and just trying to get through another task or errand theyre running for the day.
Theres certainly some assbags who make life hell, but to consider it the majority I feel for you.

I've never heard somebody actually say "The customer is always right" as a defense when they were actually right. 100% of the time I've heard that line they are in the wrong. Wrong as f#$%@

I still say we should all be entitled one retaliation per year... you get that one customer, you notify management that you're going to use it, and just unleash. Granted, this idea was inspired by just wanted to call a customer every name in the book, but as I thought about it more, I wondered if it would also have other benefits.
-- I think it'd help employees become more patient with trouble customers, as you may be tempted to use it but think, "No.... there's gotta be a worse one." Then can suck it up, calm down a bit, and continue on as professionally as possible.
-- If this was an industry-wide thing, I think it'd cause those customers to think twice. Not all of them, just the ones who abide by "Customer is always right" and know we can only say so much and go so far, and they may try to treat us with a little more respect in those situations that don't need escalation because they know they could be the customer we decide to use our retaliation on. In my experience, these are the customers that only push because we can't push back without getting in trouble, so they take advantage. Just knowing this is in our back pocket could keep that contingent from risking it.
Now, granted, there will still be people who walk in, righteously angry about something. There will be those who are angry and take it out on us regardless. And granted, these retaliations could lead to actual physicality, which is counter-productive.
It's not a perfect plan by any means. But in those moments, I defy anybody to not think, "Man, it'd be sweet to just completely go off on this asshole."

Yeah...people in retail know that is BS. Many can be right, but there are those that are so dead wrong.

I try my hardest to be a good customer, but I get groceries for my grandmother and too often I hear she's called the store to complain about this minor thing or ask if they have this item in stock, and she is very very rude to retail workers, so it always makes me cringe because I don't want them to associate her attitude with me.

I work in a Government call centre, and while the overwhelming majority of callers are fine, we do get our regulars who are a pain to deal with.
They're never right, just a pain in the arse. Thankfully, we have a mute button on our headset where we can tell our colleagues exactly how 'right' these customers are.

And when we live in a world with so many stupid people, how arrogant is it to insist that customers are always right?

Someone bought something yesterday, that rang up at a sale price, and he still wasn't happy. He told me I should give it to him for free.

It's worse when you have management that runs this way. I've had a couple disagreements with customers recently, neither of which became all that heated ("lemme check the price", "you don't get the sale prices without the card, are you sure?", that kind of stuff) and then the customers complained and when management pulled me to the side and talked to me, I'm not able to get a word in. They won't even ask you what happened or for any clarification. They assume the customer is 100% correct, stick it to ya, then go on.
In one instance, I even said "I can't even get a word in? You don't even care to hear my side of it?" and my manager literally said "No! There IS no 'other side' to it." when the customer had flat out lied...not misinterpreted or misunderstood, but LIED...about what happened; he complained that I never asked for his discount card when I had asked multiple times, I even entered 4 different phone numbers into our directory, all 4 of which came back "not found", and offered him a new card, to which he said "no". And she even ended it with a "well next time, offer a new card, and if they say no, then we'll take care of it". Ya know, just like they were "taking care of it" right then.
TLDR: I f***ing hate retail with all my heart.

When I worked fast food at Wendy's our manager had our backs 100% against rude customers. It was great.
