I always thought that "The customer is always right.....within reason" was a more appropriate and logical viewpoint

That's the thing is it not a written rule. I mean yeah make them happen so they come back but it not in any policy that says that it is a legitment argument. People took it to heart and will try to get away with anything they can and most retailers will cave in so they spend what little money they are willing to pay in there store. Even if the store makes nothing on that sale. I've seen it done before and became a pet peeve of mind along the way. All that line is was a store slogan from the 50's. People took it as a written rule in the retail world. Most cases they are wrong and they hate being wrong and that is why they clause such a scene to fight it because that don't want to be wrong.
Honestly if it was me, I would tell them no if it didn't mean losing my job at the time. They don't deserve it because they would treat you like sh*t in the process. Honestly I wouldn't want there kind of business. If more people stepped up and did it that way. They would be forced to change when nobody gives in.

When I worked in a deli some woman asked me if the honey ham was chicken. She was wrong. Oh so wrong.

Working retail has made me very empathetic to the cash register jockeys. I always try to be the best customer possible. I've never argued with a bad customer as that just makes everyone miserable. But I'll make a snide comment or two with the cashier when said bad customer leaves. Usually a long the lines of "What a douchebag."

With a lot of my health stuff, my managers have helped me, when there have been nasty people. I do see a lot of very nice people, though.

I've been pretty lucky. Places I've worked while doing customer-facing stuff always had pretty well-written guidelines about what was/wasn't acceptable. If a customer wanted something that wasn't in those guidelines I'd always go, "Unfortunately I'm not permitted to make that decision - would you like me to get my manager?" and then let them handle it.
"Would you like to speak to my manager?" was my go to line and I'd always use it WAAAAY before it got to the point where the customer was getting heated about something.
Some managers will try to push back at you for calling them so much, but I always pointed to the guidelines (or handbook, whatever) and go, "I'm just following your instructions - maybe we need to change our guidelines?"

Amen brotha! I work at Bon Ton and I can't tell you how often I deal with people who apparently know how our coupons work better than we do.
Around Christmas time I got SO many lectures on business ethics because I didn't have the ability to change our company policies for their benefit and would rather have a job than give them 30% off when I've already explained that I can't do that and why I can't. Sometimes I'm afraid I'm going to jump over the counter and assault them...

It's meant to mean that the customer knows what it is that they want. Of course, spoilt idiots have changed its meaning.

To quote Ben Affleck "The customer's always an asshole!" Yeah, you want to learn to truly hate people? Work retail for a few years. Working just one Senior Citizen's Day was enough for me.

I used to be a cook, so I never had to deal with customers. Still, it would happen occasionally (mostly when I was off the clock, at that.) There's a solid percentage of them that are straight-up dicks. Hey, you have money to spend. Awesome! Just like everybody else. That's not a very good reason to just talk down to people or be entitled. I would never last in customer service, because I would make it about a week before I told some a hole to go f*** himself.

It's meant to mean that the customer knows what it is that they want. Of course, spoilt idiots have changed its meaning. Yes, it's more along the lines of "The market is always right" Let's say you're selling fruit and think that grapes are the best thing ever. So you stock up on a bunch and give them a low price. But your customers are mostly just interested in buying apples, and would be willing to buy various types of apples if you had them for sale. If you keep trying to offer mostly grapes because you think that everybody should like them over apples, then you're wrong since the customers don't want that.

Absolute bullshit, and I've had some memorable encounters to prove it.
I've been read the riot act by customers for things ranging from foyer cart placement (I had absolutely nothing to do with that, I'd just gotten back from lunch) to discount cards to asking for ID before accepting a check. That last one is standard practice everywhere that still accepts checks, yet this one old lady thought she should be exempt because she didn't drive and didn't carry her driver's license. Just ludicrous.
Word to the wise: if your place of employment offers a coupon book for anything, familiarize yourself with the contents, or else you'll witness epic customer meltdowns when they blame you for not informing them that there was a coupon for one thing out of the $100+ worth of stuff they'd purchased and subsequently have to return it all! Can't make that up if I tried.
This one lady used to show up at Petco every so often. Nobody wanted to deal with her. She was stubborn as hell and, for some reason, always wanted her purchases rounded up to the next dollar even after it was explained to her that it wasn't possible for a large chunk of the year as we only did that when the charity drives were going on. She was exceptionally nice to me after I gave my notice, go figure.

I work at a car dealership and can say this: the worst customers are those that have just a little knowledge. Enough to suck away your time and energy with demands that don't make sense, questions you have no way of answering and the unshakable belief that you can always offer them more.
No, no I can't and I won't.
