I got sucked into "Intervention", which is a show following drug addicts who don't know they're about to be directed to an intervention with their loved ones. I watched this one show on a meth addict who fell back into her TV stand and the TV came down on top of her. She cursed and wanted to know who pushed her. Nobody was near her.
I also watch "Hoarders" and I don't know why. That show upsets me with the amount of untreated mental illness there is, but it sucks me in all the time.
I used to watch this show called "I survived". I always found the stories about surviving crazy accidents to be interesting, but the show became a bunch of sexual assault stories which are uncomfortable to watch naturally.

I try to avoid these shows; while they can have their benefits and are trying to help folk, it just seems a bit exploitative to me. I know that for the most part people have agreed to be filmed, but I don't really want to see someone's dirty laundry aired in public.

Not to hijack the thread, but I've recently wondered that myself, at what point do those shows become exploitation? Personally I don't watch Intervention, I watch Hoarders and My 600lb Life.

I clicked on this thread thinking anout moments on tv that either scripted or not, were emotionally charged.
All I could think of was the episode of Fresh Prince where Will, the character, met up with his dad and was set to go on a trip with him and ultimately; his dad bailed and left it to Uncle Phil to give him the news.
Edit: can someone embed or link the youtube clip. I'm tearing up just writing about it.

That show...."What would you do?"
I watched that one for a few seasons. I really liked it's "hey maybe don't be a dick" approach to candid camera.

I've recently fallen into the disgusting rabbit hole that is 'My 600-lb Life'. It blows my mind that folks can allow themselves to get in that condition. After about 600+ pounds, you'd think someone would say, "Oh shit, maybe I'll just have a salad."

Full House when Uncle Jesse's grandpa died This was a trope in a lot of sitcoms. My favorite was when Everybody Loves Raymond parodied it with a grandmother. Everything led up to what you thought was going to happen since she made everyone happy and brought the family together. Not only did she not die, but it turns out she wasn't even related to them. And on top of that, they find out that their family name was likely stolen by their great grandparents.

I watched a few episodes of my 600 lbs life and then I got passed because holy deal is it exploitive. At no point is any kind of mental health care offered to try to help these people with their underlying problems.

At no point is any kind of mental health care offered to try to help these people with their underlying problems. I've watched many episodes that involve the people talking to therapists. Not all of them are the way they are because of mental health issues.

I tried to watch extreme cheapskates once, and when the woman wanted to serve her friend and his wife dinner, with all ingredients she got from the dumpster, I had to turn it off.

I miss the Middle on Wednesdays lol. Me too. I guess they needed an anchor to get people to watch American Housewife. I just follow it wherever it goes. Helps that I am usually at the gym where they have both shows on TVs and I can look at whatever's on. But I go with The Middle first. /Binge this season now! //You see Frankie's panties ;-)

I think it would come down to how much exploring into their personal circumstances and background, and how much is paraded on camera. As I've said, the people on their agree to be filmed and presumably give their consent for information to be revealed - to me, it's just how much is relevant to the issue at hand. For example, would someone be obese if their parents were drug addicts? Not necessarily, but it's another angle that TV shows can use on camera.
