In '97, it was a different story. I was a sphmore in high school when this aired and EVERYONE talked about it. It was very groundbreaking and also very controversial. ABC had sponsors pulling their ads from her show which caused it to be cancelled. For a short time, I think it looked like her coming out ruined Ellen's career until her talk show came on the air in 2003 that is still on the air today.

Brave move, landmark moment.
I vividly remember the magazine covers after it happened.

I was already a fan of Ellen's show before the episode aired, but this kept me invested. The hype around it was intense.

My response to it was, "Why is this a big deal? So she's gay." That's coming from someone raised in Southern Indiana (aka Redneck Central).

I remember them teasing it in episodes all season long. Those were some damn good jokes.

I remember Ellen going on the talk show circuit saying she was going to come out as Lebanese and other things. The episode did great ratings but then the post-out Ellen sitcom kinda tanked. So it's super cool that Ellen never stopped working and evolving as a stand up and performer and had this great second (or maybe third act of fame) with her talk show.

What not a lot of people talk about is 'the other woman' in the story - Laura Dern. You can't exactly prove it, but after an Oscar nomination for Rambling Rose (good movie, by the way) and as well in popularity with Jurassic Park, after this episode aired, Dern couldn't get cast in ANYTHING major. She might as well have evaporated the minute the episode ended. So yes, both Ellen (the show and woman) took heat, but they recovered.
Dern never has.

She never really stopped working though and has appeared in a ton of stuff since then.

Thank you.

Roseanne went to a gay bar and kissed a woman on her sitcom in 1994. I suppose the context is different.
