I watched this on Amazon last night and was surprisingly entertained by it.
It's basically an all-female kumite movie kind of in the vein of Bloodsport.
There are a few subtle nods to Bloodsport in it, but really it's pretty much it's own thing. I really enjoyed it though. The storytelling was concise and left a lot of stuff implied/unsaid which is refreshing because too many movies over-explain stuff. There weren't any overly long flashbacks to establish stuff, just a few well-placed lines of dialogue and good character moments.
The fight scenes were all really well done (Round 2 of this kumite is a FREAKING WEAPONS ROUND!!!) and even the non-fighting scenes were pretty solid for this kind of movie.
There is one REALLY cheesy part, but it only lasts for like 10 seconds so it's easy to overlook.
Other than that I thought the main characters all had their idiosyncrasies that made them distinct enough - especially the Australian fighter - I could watch a prequel about her just going on a cross-country fighting journey of some kind.
What I like most about it is how it made the story of the sensai roles equally as fleshed out as the main character's role. By the end I was more emotionally involved than I thought I'd be by a movie like this haha!
It also comes out the gate at full sprint so they don't take too long to get to the meat of the story. The opening credits are basically a montage of the Kumite organizers scouting talents - which was pretty cool.
I'm glad this kind of movie is getting made. Usually action films at this budget level are pretty crappy and I hope more directors are able to execute really solid and fun action like this.
