Maybe this just says something about my psyche that I don't like people going out of their way to do nice things for me. I don't think holding a door open is that far out of people's way. Yeah, it's literally not out of the way at all. It's a simple act of courtesy. Likewise, I glance behind me when I'm passing through a doorway to see if anyone is right behind me - I'll hold the door open for them, as well. Not for a line of like 30 people, but 1-2, sure. Especially if they have kids - kids are nuts and will dash into traffic without a second thought.

I think others already covered my sentiments on this one.

People who don't acknowledge me holding a door open for them is my berserk button. I am incapable of keeping my mouth shut when it happens. Where I work, it always seems like the higher ups are the ones guilty of this.

If the person isn't able-bodied, I'll wait the few extra seconds or however long for them to make it through the door. I'll take feeling awkward over them having to struggle with the door.

I've done things, like holding the door (is don't care if you're a man or woman, older or younger), I've "paid it forward" and bought a coffee for the person behind me at dunkin donuts. I have had people shut the door on me (maybe unintentionally), and I wouldn't want to do that to someone else. Like I said, the world can be a nasty place, but there are people that want to do nice things.

I'm an able bodied person in his prime. If I'm not carrying things if you have to wait to hold the door for me you're doing it for no reason. Hell if its a ridiculously long time I just walk slower after I tell them not to. it's good manners to hold the door open for someone else if they're going through it as well. I'll be honest. If someone is opening a door, sees me right behind them and doesn't at least try to hold it for me, I just assume they are a dick.

The only times I've not held a door open is if I haven't seen them, If I've let a door close and someone immediately follows then I'll apologise.

Ok guys. It's pretty clear what the vast majority of us think in this topic and have told the OP our thoughts on it. Before it becomes too much of a pile-on and the comments start moving into flaming territory, I'm locking this up.
