WWE has recently done some editing to the theme music for the TNT and Prime Time episodes on the Network.
The TNT theme has been changed to generic music. When these shows were originally added to the Network, the theme used was a WWE cover version of Herb Alpert's "1980" (which was the TNT theme during its original run in the '80s).
As for Prime Time, the April 1986 to March 1988 shows now have theme music that sounds like (but isn't) the 1988-1991 Prime Time theme. This change happened sometime in the last couple of days.

In a similar move, they are now going back and adding the different music for Rick Rude (used in the recently uploaded Prime Time episodes) to shows that have been up for a long time, like PPVs and SNME episodes. They've also replaced Goldberg's WWE theme with his WCW theme on WrestleMania 20.

Why do they do all of these music edits? Are they seriously afraid Herb Alpert is going to come after them over 30+ year old episodes of TNT? These shows aren't that harmed by it but others are rendered incomprehensible. ECW shows are decimated by music edits. Mid South only had the Jeff Beck theme edited into cheesy 80s synth, and maybe "Another One Bites The Dust" was edited out. Ironically one episode they accidentally left in the Stagger Lee song.
This is a major reason I'm in no hurry for Memphis to be on the Network. By 1983 they had so many video packages it would be impossible to watch, since often times the music of choice had a specific point to it.

You do know WWE isn't the only one to do this. This has been a problem, especially in the DVD era in general. Look how long it took to get Wonder Years and WKRP on DVD. This was because music rights are that much more these days...hence why we started with watered down best of versions at first. CBS in particular still plays havoc with anything it releases as DVD sets, including from the Paramount library and more.

Think that since they crack down on sound-alikes, someone only now realized that Rude's theme is based on The Stripper, and thus they feared David Rose's estate.

The new music, to me at least, sounds even closer to it if anything. They also replaced Shane Douglas's 2000-01 WCW theme, which is a knockoff of Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers," yet the music used in its place is also a blatant sound-a-like of PS.

I'm just saying who really cares if they have it or not? If you watch old AWA on ESPN they clearly have stuff like the Bad Company theme playing for that tag team, or on that Mid South Cheap Seats episode they still had the Jeff Beck intro instead of the goofy WWE synth edit.

They've also replaced Goldberg's WWE theme with his WCW theme on WrestleMania 20. ... Why? Like, I can't see any reason at all to do that, unless for whatever reason they don't own his WWE theme which doesn't really make any sense.

They've spent years dubbing the WWE theme over the WCW footage, just to now dub the WCW theme over the WWE footage now that they have him.

The original music licensing was for broadcast television (and not "in perpetuity") and for the WWE to continue to use it, they should pay the money for it. That's what turned me off to Network edited versions of promotions other than the WWE. They're so cheap they couldn't get a license for the music? No wonder the music industry is in the shitter. [/quote] It's much more an indictment of WWE and their lack of foresight for future broadcast and media mediums.

EVERYONE has done this.

I bet WWE never even bothered to get the licensing or rights to use that music back then. Back in 1985 people didn't care as much about that type of stuff as it was more exposure.
