Has this happened to anybody else? Today I got my Blu Ray copy of "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" in the mail. It was a Best Buy-exclusive steelbook copy and I couldn't pass it up. The movie won't officially be released until this coming Tuesday, yet I got my copy today. This isn't the first that this has happened as nearly two years ago, I pre-ordered "Furious 7" on Blu Ray, also a Best Buy steelbook, and got it the day before it hit stores.
Not that I am complaining. I just am a little bit surprised that some services do this.

I don't know if this counts, but when I was a teen and worked at Walmart, we would always sell CDs and movies prior to the release date if we knew the customer...
We had Metallica's Load in the back for a week and a half prior to its release, and half the inventory was sold before it was officially released

The only time it's happened to me is when I preordered Wii Party. I bought it from Amazon and got it like two days before the actual release date. I think it was an accident rather than intentional.
It hasn't happened since then, but every time I preorder a game, I keep hoping it'll get here sooner than the release date.

I got one of the PS2 Final Fantasy games a few days before the official release. It's a while ago but I think it was FF-X2.

When play.com used to be good (before it was bought out by Rakuten) it was common to get DVDs at least a couple of days before their release date. Recently, I got Breath of the Wild for WiiU a day before release.

Happened to me with Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast. Ended up getting it like 4 days early.

Pre-ordered? No. But my family did get to try peanut butter M&Ms six months before they were announced. My dad found them in a giant bin at Big Lots - the only bag in a sea of peanuts. He used them as a conversation starter. "Want to try peanut butter M&Ms? I don't think we're supposed to have these yet."

Recently, I got Breath of the Wild for WiiU a day before release. Yeah back then pre-ordered videogames usually arrived a day or two early, IIRC Mario Galaxy arrived the Monday or Tuesday before it's Friday release. Well I say back then, I haven't pre-ordered a game in ages.

Used to be quite common to get games a day or two before release if you pre-ordered online. I think the earliest I ever got something was 3D Dot Game Heroes that was like 8 days early.

From what I remember, we typed in the price under "electronics" instead of scanning the actual item.

Not through the mail but I did end up getting the very first Eddie Guerrero WWE DVD over two months before it was officially released. Walmart had a big display of DVDs up and my friend and I were going through it and happened to find a few of them sitting there. We were stunned. We'd found stuff a week early before but never over two months early. That was an awesome score. I watched the whole thing a few times over before it made it to other stores.

Now that you mention it, I remembered that when I was in 4th grade, someone brought in a VHS of Pocahontas and this was a month before its release. Looking back, I wasn't sure if it was an official release, a promotional copy or a bootlegged version. It had trailers on there and the quality didn't look shoddy. I think the girl's parent had the hookup through a connection and had gotten a VHS a little early. One thing that I will note is that the clamshell case had different artwork than when Disney officially released it.

I remember being in New York when I was a kid and there were VHS tapes on tables out in the street. There were all kinds of new movies on them. Some were even currently in the theaters. I couldn't tell you the quality of the tapes themselves because we didn't stop to buy any. The covers did look good from what I saw of them. Obviously you won't see stuff like that out in public anymore since there was such a huge crackdown on that stuff. You don't even see early releases in stores too often anymore. Things have gotten a lot more strict. I'm surprised it took so long.

Not really. Circuit City sold me St. Anger about 5 days before its release, so that was neat.
Speaking of Metallica, I want to say that I got the deluxe vinyl box-set of "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" about 3 days or so before the release date.

I used to live near a mom and pop video rental shop, and they would always put movies out for rent as soon as they received their shipment instead of release date. It was such a hole in the wall type place off the beaten path that no one noticed or cared.

In some cases, it'd be retailer(s) selling items before they're supposed to. If you got it a few days early at a Best Buy - which is probably when they actually get it, it's not like it shows up early Tuesday a.m. before the store opens, that'd be the case.
But this sounds different - direct from their distribution center - and in this case I'd reckon there's a prior agreement with Best Buy and the DVD/Blu-Ray manufacturers. I mean, you pre-ordered it and that seems like it'd probably be a perk for doing so; maybe they always do that, maybe every so often.
Back around 1999-2000 my local comic store I had a pull list at would sell new comics a few days early - big no-no, and soon after they started this they got caught and IIRC penalized for it by the distributor.
