This goes back last week but friend talked me into watching this again. Last time I saw it was when it came out. Somehow this movie got worse. Lets see we lost most of the original actors, Paul Anderson didn't come back the effects are terrible the title screen is a lazy effort yet this awful movie had a higher budget and yet I say again where in the hell did the money go. I know in MK3 they killed off Cage but that doesn't mean you should just be like the game.

I saw Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in the theaters!
Whenever I go into one of these big superhero event films I worry that it could end up like Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. This film is always chucking characters at you only to disappear a couple minutes later.

There's a guy on Twitter who watched this movie every day for a year. He's brave for having to endure this movie for one whole year.

I did too, absolutely loved it at the time and I'd be lying if I said I didn't own both of the theatrical films plus both volumes of Legacy on Blu Ray but I don't own Annihilation because I actually enjoy the film. It did give us this though.

I thought it was hilarious, just a shame it's not supposed to be a comedy.

I was too young to see this in theaters by myself but my sister snuck me in, I should've apologised cause this movie blows.
At least with Street Fighter it's got camp value & Raul Julia's performance to carry it but MK:A is just abysmal (I love the first one though)

Shao Kahn not wearing his mask is still something I don't understand. I mean, he wore it for one scene and had the "v" thing for another scene, but not the whole time? I don't know.

Johhny Cage was pretty unanimously praised as the best thing about the first movie, so it made zero sense to not bring back the original actor and kill him off. The only way that's excusable is if he refused to come back, but I've never heard it confirmed one way or the other.

From IMDB Linden Ashby was asked to return as Johnny Cage, but turned it down after reading the script. As it's from IMDB take it with a pinch of salt

I'm a guy that will always proclaim the original MK film to be the greatest videogame film ever made (unless you count stuff heavily influenced by videogames like "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" or "Wreck-It Ralph"). If you take it as it is meant to be; an homage to kung fu/karate films with a sci-fi element tossed in (just like the story of the MK games themselves were), it knocks that out of the park. It didn't completely whiff on being a tribute to its game and what the game itself was inspired by like "Super Mario Bros." or completely change the story like "Street Fighter" did.
Now, Annihilation is what happens when you just stray too far off the path, like the original SMB and SF films did. Now, the stories for MK II and III do become more sci-fi and convoluted, so on that respect I can understand (not forgive, mind you, but understand) where they botched that.

Always felt one big way they blew it with Annihilation (outside of it just being a horribly written and directed film in the first place) was that they didn't adapt MK 2 before jumping into all the MK 3 stuff. MK 2 was bigger than the original but still largely kept the same format (tournament in a fantastical setting), it just upped the ante a bit on the number of characters, some of the special moves, and bigger settings.
Instead, they dove headlong into basically trying to make "Mortal Kombat Trilogy: the Movie", which even if it was handled more competently was still likely a doomed proposition coming off of a single, much simpler original film.
