As someone who has been surrounded by film critics various times, I will never, ever understand the pure viterol given towards people who text during a movie.

Is it annoying? Yeah. Is it distracting? Of course. But some of the comments I see around are downright ridiculous and over the top that it makes me feel disconnected from that community in general.

Also, f*** that guy. If that's your reaction to this stuff, you deserve to be alone.

Texting during a movie is awful. It's distracting to everyone in the theater. Suing her for 17 dollars is still awful. Look at it this way, you aren't compatible and it's best that they figured it out now.

Of course, like I mentioned, that's if any of this is true considering there's no source and the only link is to a page to book tickets for the movie, which makes me suspect it's one of those articles that solely exists to dump links. My trust in this article isn't improved by the fact that the title is an outright clickbait lie as according to the article, he's suing to get his money back, which still very petty, but not quite the same as taking a case of bad manners to courts. So I wouldn't be shocked if, assuming they didn't pull this straight out of their ass, they "omitted" other relevant pieces of information.

Also this, I read this last night and something about it set off my bullshit alarms.

When I clicked this link on another site I was hoping for a good chuckle and expected to take his side, but honestly, this guy sounds like a creep. Not surprised the woman abandoned him...you go girl He labels his experience with her as "nut-job, self-centered, bizarro-land experiences" which sounds like a perfection description of him.

I've never once been bothered by someone else in the cinema on their phone (except if it makes a noise). Being sat next to a friend or whatever who is on their phone annoys me more from the movement than anything...most rational human beings know how to lower the brightness.

In the petition, Vezmar said the woman “activated her phone at least 10-20 times in 15 minutes to read and send text messages.”


Vezmar said he asked her to stop but she refused. He said he told her that maybe she could go outside to text. She left the theater and never came back, Vezmar said.


She also left in her car, which they had driven to the theater, leaving Vezmar without a ride, he said. He said he texted her a few days later asking for the price of the ticket but she refused to pay it.


The woman said Tuesday she only texted on her phone in the theater two or three times.


“I had my phone low and I wasn’t bothering anybody,” she said. She was texting a friend, who was having a fight with her boyfriend, she said. “It wasn’t like constant texting.”


She said Vezmar had called her to ask her to pay him back for the movie ticket but she refused because “he took me out on a date.”


She said she also planned to file a protective order against Vezmar for contacting her little sister to get the money for the movie ticket.


According to the petition, the texting was a “direct violation” of the theater’s policy and that his date “adversely” affected Vezmar’s viewing experience and that of other patrons.


“While damages sought are modest, the principle is important as defendant’s behavior is a threat to civilized society,” the petition said.


“I’m not a bad woman,” the woman told the Statesman. “I just went out on a date.”

It's doesn't necessarily bother me, but I can see where someone would be distracted by it.

If you're not there to watch the movie then GTFO. I don't care if somebody died. GTFO.

Going to a movie theater to watch a film is a necessary evil. I wish we were at the point where movies could be viewed from the comfort of one's own home on release date legally. Instead you're forced to sit in uncomfortable chairs with a bunch of strangers. That's only a minor annoyance until someone decides they'd rather do something they could of done at home or virtually anywhere else instead.

Every theater I have ever been to since I was like 13 has had rather comfortable chairs.

Hell with them struggling to get people into theaters this is more true than ever as almost all of them near me have extra wide or flat out recliner seats.

At one of the annual events I go to, it's a horror/thriller kind of event over the course of several midnights in a row, and the programmer encourages violence or property damage (i.e., the perpetrator's phone) if someone sees a jerk with a phone out during the screening. It's only said in jest, but cinephiles love the premise every time he brings it up, and it gets a huge pop, which is usually enough to get the point across to any "that guy"s in the audience that might have somehow made it into that sort of venue/event.

EDIT: Again, context is important here. It's suggested in jest and not meant literally. It's the contempt for inconsiderate people who think it's their world and we're all just living in it that's real.
