Since it doesn't seem like stores still carry official Sony PS3 controllers, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on which to purchase?
Any sites or brands to watch out for?

I think you can use PS4 controllers for PS3s.

I think you can use PS4 controllers for PS3s. Some games yes, some no. What you cannot do is use them wirelessly, nor can you use the home button at all. So maybe grab like a rock candy regular pad and a ps4 controller as well. I dunno.

Check a store like Walmart or Best Buy. They usually have some first party controllers in stock.
Worst comes to worst, buy a preowned DS3 controller from Gamestop. Used controllers can be a crapshoot, but you can always return the controller for a full refund if it doesn't work.
