Looking thru some old boxes I actually found the demo disc from Pizza Hut. Forgot how many hours I put into that demo just messing around before just buying the game.
When people bring up PS1 system sellers I would say MGS would just be behind FF7.
Also we can't forget those great cutscenes they could last from 5-10 minutes unlike the 4th one where I feel like some of them last a hour

I still can't get over the 45-minute cutscene in the second one between the fight against the Metal Gear RAY units and the fight against Solidus.
Anyway, I bought this game after having played MGS2. Yes, I went backwards with it, but I am glad that I did it. Also, I remember it took me nearly three weeks to beat Metal Gear REX.

I remember playing a demo disc (the Winter '98 Jampack, from Google) that had Metal Gear Solid on it and always dying so quickly due to not having a single clue how to play a stealth game at the time and just running into the enemies. I actually hadn't seen anything past the initial elevator until I watched someone else play it months later. Good times. Which is kind of funny since you can actually do this in MGS5 and have it work out if you kill everyone. Had them gameplay strats early.
Speaking of cutscenes, I don't think I'll ever end up going back to 4 because of how long the cutscenes are. The gameplay is fun and all, but it's too much of a slog to get through it. Which doesn't bother me too much because I wasn't a fan of how it ended anyway.

The Ladder in MGS3 was the biggest pisstake
At least the cutscenes advanced the story or just looked badass

The good thing about MGS4 is that you can pause through the cutscenes and skip if you want to, unlike the other games when you would just have to sit through or skip.

I had that same pizza hut demo disc. I gave it to a friend of mine who posts here actually haha. It was the blue one.
Metal Gear Solid was amazing. I was so enthralled with that game. Rented it 2-3 times then eventually got it as a birthday present for I think my 13th birthday. I loved how the plot explored heady concepts involving everything from love to war. I love so much about that game, though I remember someone in my class spoiled me about Miller before I got to it myself. It was still a cool moment for the big reveal. It was definitely ahead of its time with production values, too.

Things like your breath or footprints giving you away were such a leap forward for games and that was just the demo.
I do miss that feeling of progress in the medium, it's slowed down these days so it's much less noticeable on a game to game basis (VR may change that view).

I remember very vividly renting the game for my first playthrough, didn't take long to realize that as a player you couldn't just simply plow through the genome soldiers and expect to survive. Learned very quickly about the whole staying stealthy, hiding, and not drawing attention to your position unless it was necessary.
The biggest surprise for me personally was submitting to Ocelot's torture brings you the sad ending with Meryl and I would be lying if I said it didn't make my choke up. At the time, I didn't know it would bring you the stealth camouflage as a bonus when you beat the game. I hated that ending so much that I played it again and damn near broke my thumb during the torture sequence just to get the good ending.

Metal Gear Solid is a fantastic game but I always thought it played really stiff, so I played the Twin Snakes version first time I played it. I know Some of the cutscenes they redid are kind of laughable They redid the voice lines as well and well... you can tell some of them are half assing it compared to the original. Twin Snakes I know gets a ton of flak and it's got its flaws, but I thought it was still playable.
Overall, if you want to have the full amazing metal gear like story, play the original. If you like gameplay over story, go Twin Snakes.

My introduction to the game was through the Pizza Hut demo as well. You were able to play up until the DARPA Chief.
That is a pretty lengthy demo based on what you could do and where to explore. They even give you some other items you don't get till later in the actual game. There's also clues to other stuff that comes later such as Meryl in her cell and the guards talking about the Ninja. It was enough to make you want more after devoting time to it. This was the second game I ended up getting for PS1 right after Tomba. The reason for both games was due to how expansive the demo was, it actually allowed for you to think you're playing a game and not a demo.
A few other games on the Pizza Hut demo were Crash Bandicoot Warped, Medievil, Tomb Raider 3 and Gran Turismo. While I would end up buying all these games later on, they didn't entice me enough at the time because they offered you a chance to test the controls and but not play the game at least enough to make you want to buy it. Tomba and Metal Gear Solid were perfect examples of how to sell the game through the demo.
Funnily enough, I ended up buying a PS2 when MGS2 came out, that and Smackdown Just Bring It were the only games I was looking forward to, but both were heavily disappointing. While I don't hate MGS2 and actually have gone back to it numerous times, it's still heavily flawed especially through it's story and enjoyment. I bring up enjoyment because it's a game you beat but still feel unsatisfied. The whole experience is one downer after another, it doesn't have a great cast to flesh out the experience like the first game.
MGS3 on the other hand was a great game, mostly because it wasn't bringing up Shadow Moses every 5 minutes. It didn't exceed the hype that the original MGS did, but not many games ever will.
Once I played MGS4, I knew I was f***ing done with the franchise, what a joke. I swear, this series spent more time trying to be a love letter to the original than it did to progressing the franchise in a good direction. Metal Gear Solid the franchise became that jilted ex that would call you up out of the blue and remind you of the days when you two were happy together if only to show you how self destructive you would be now if you got back together.
I never bothered with MGS5, but honestly I had no intention of ever going back. Stick with the original game because it's at least well crafted. The second game is only needed if you want to progress your depression. The third game is if you need to rinse that bad taste out of your mouth from the previous game. The fourth game is there to comfort you into wanting to stop playing that one and pull out your PS1 and play the original again.

I think the demo I had only had you get past the second screen or so but that was enough to intrigue me. There seemed to be a lot you could do and it made me want to see what the full game would be like. So I got it when it came out and was very pleased.
MGS2 was good but in my opinion a bit of a letdown after the first installment.
MGS3 was my favorite one. Especially in the jungle it felt like there was so much to do on every screen and the menu stuff didn't bother me in the slightest. Loved everything surrounding the boss "The End". Plus you can't beat the feel of that last battle.
I never played past these.

I bought the game on a whim, and at first greatly disliked it. But after finally taking the time to learn the gameplay, I came to really appreciate it. I fully intend, one of these days, to get the MGS remasters for 360.

An all time classic; I never completed it, but came so close.
It always amused me that no matter how often you died, even multiple times on the trot, the same level of emotion would be applied to every 'Snake? SNAKE!?! SNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAKE!'

If you like gameplay over story, go Twin Snakes. I kind of disagree. While the gameplay's more polished in general, it's not geared (no pun intended) for the game the engine's been put into. First person mode's inclusion absolutely murders the entire Ocelot fight, one of the best battles in the game.

While I dig the different visual tones the Metal Gear Series has had with the various games differing vastly in color pallette, I do wish we'd gotten another game with the cold silvers and blues like the 98 game had.

Speaking on the series as a whole, I sometimes wonder how 4 would've turned out had 2 not been such a massive clusterf*** of a story. MGS is pretty straightforward in terms of story, and 3 isn't too bad either (Until TPP), but 2 is just so damn out there with memes, information control, and the Patriots that they had to explain all this shit while also trying to wrap up Snake's story. I dunno, maybe it would've always been convoluted, but who knows.

Anyone ever play the older metal gears? The ones on the NES? That's where its at. Played MGS quite late but loved it. Some of the puzzels were very clever, such as the code on the back of the CD box. Didnt play any others until Snake eater for the 3DS and was very disappointed. Cut scene overload, even to save the game.
