Ultimate adding the missing characters
I remember when I first played 3 in the Arcade I told myself this was really different from 2 and not in a good way

Ultimate practically the same game but with scorpion, smoke, kitana, and jade. So that gets my vote.

Eh, I always found the ninjas a tad overrated anyway so I was fine with the original. Either way me boy Street is in both so both get a pass  |

Was it MKIII that added the run button? To me that is when I got out of the MK games.

Ultimate.
It fixed a bunch of problems with the base game.
Not just beefing up the original roster being rather anemic. (Including putting in Scorpion who has pretty much been the games figurehead since the first MK)
It fixed the AI, rebalanced some of the moves, and a few other things I can't think of.

My neighbors had MK2 and it was amazing. My parents absolutely forbid me from getting MK3, but then my grandparents got it for me anyway. I played the shit out of it, but it was an objectively horrible game. If Ultimate is different in any way, it has to be better I imagine.

I feel like this would be more of a contest between Ultimate 3 and Trilogy than between vanilla and Ultimate 3. Though with Trilogy you've got the fact the PS1 and N64 versions of it are basically two different games and they both have things they do better than the other one.

Ultimate was a lot better. Bigger roster, better AI, more responsive controls, and it got rid of some of the dial-a-combo shit that plagued the original MK3.

Ultimate, for all the reasons listed above.
As broken as it is, I still prefer Trilogy over both versions.

Ultimate not counting trilogy is the definitive and best version fixed alot of the initial problems and is just way more fun.
But even with that said...MK TRILOGY is even better with its MVC2 level of brokeness.

Ultimate, because they brought back Scorpion, my all-time favorite character. It really pissed me off that he was taken out of 3. Damn you, Daniel Pesina.
