comicbook.com/marvel/2017/05/29/spider-man-homecoming-emoji-movie-social-media/Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Spider-Man: Homecoming are the most talked about upcoming movies on social media from a cumulative standpoint, but it isn’t all good news for the next Marvel Studios film. With just over a month until release, Spider-Man: Homecoming should be building its buzz to its highest level. And yet, according to marketing data and analytics company comScore’s PreAct tracking service, Spider-Man: Homecoming was overshadowed by The Emoji Movie during the week of May 15-21. For that week, Baywatch, Wonder Woman, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales were the top three most talked about movies on social media. That’s understandable given that Baywatch and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opened over the Memorial Day weekend and Wonder Woman is set to follow this weekend. However, The Emoji Movie won’t open in theaters until July 28, weeks after Spider-Man: Homecoming. For the animated comedy to be stealing attention from the next big Marvel superhero sensation must be at least a bit frustrating for the film’s marketing department. War for the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: The Last Knight, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Mummy, and Blade Runner 2049 fill out the remaining top 10 spots on comScore's chart. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returns home to live with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. He also tries to return to his normal daily routine -- distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear. Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts, from a screenplay by Jonathan M. Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters July 7.

I think the buzz for the Emoji Movie is how bad it will be & if this will be the deathblow to Sony.
I'm hoping it does, actually.

Yes but hasn't almost all of the Emoji Movie's buzz been really, really ridiculously bad?

anyone else not give two shits about how much something is talked about on social media? "More people on Twitter mentioned The Emoji Movie than they did Spider-Man." fine, but that doesn't what they're saying is positive. if most of the people talking about The Emoji Movie are going "Two of the characters in #TheEmojiMovie are pieces of poo. That looks like one of the stupidest movies of all time" should Spider-Man really be worried?

It makes sense. This is the 3rd reboot of Spider-man in 15 years. People have seen it already.
Emoji looks like awful stuff, but I could easily see it makin a ton of money.
It's either gonna be huge or bomb; there's not gonna be an in between

It's either gonna be huge or bomb; there's not gonna be an in between I think it'll depend on how people in general interpret the film. Obviously, critics are gonna trash this film, which means people will go just to spite critics. That being said, there's very little substance in this film, considering the core premise is an emoji wanting to become a Jack of all trades.

I can see a buncha kids wanting to see it regardless of how critics take it. It looks like 'Fad: the movie'. So it could do great initially and then not age well at all.

...then it turns out they were counting all the social media that had the word "movie" in it next to an actual emoji to help bump the numbers up....

Nerdist thinks it looks good.
But that could just mean Chris Hardwick has friends working on the movie and doesn't want to burn bridges, or someone from the movie is coming on the podcast or @midnight.

The advertising for the new Spider-Man is surprising, but only because there's very little about the movie that we don't know. People have already seen Tom Holland as Spider-Man because Civil War was a thing. We've already seen him in the red and blue tights. We've seen him interact with other parts of the MCU. The trailers and TV spots give away a lot of information about the movie. Chances are that Spider-Man and his supporting cast will survive to make it to Avengers 3. The stakes in Homecoming are going to be so low-stake that nothing about the MCU will change. And it's the sixth Spider-Man movie in 15 years. It's not like the movie is going to do something random that will set social media alight, like having Peter shoot webbing out of his nipples or his anus or something.
I can't speak to the emoji movie, but the newest Spider-Man flick leaves little to the imagination unlike something like The Last Jedi. Will Luke be killed off? How will the movie deal with Princess Leia given Carrie Fisher's passing? How will Kylo Ren get his revenge? Will Poe finally profess his feelings for Finn? There are so many unknowns that push more conversation.

Yes but hasn't almost all of the Emoji Movie's buzz been really, really ridiculously bad? Once again, we live in a world where "as long as they're talking about you" is a metric for quantitative success. "F*** The Haters" mentality may be one of the worse societal developments in the last century.

As much as I love Chris, his inability to criticize anything has made me enjoy him much less over the last few years. I think he's done a lot to legitimize being a geek, but his thinking that any artform is a legitimate artform, that there's worth in even the most cynical of endeavors, drives me bonkers. I see where he's coming from with his defense, but sometimes, a cash grab is a cash grab, and I think he's unwilling to admit that a lot.
