For those curious: "Fake plastic submarine" is what the band used to call girls who "tried too hard" to be sexy in high school.
Source: Seventeen year old DJ banter that I still somehow remember. I'm not a fan of the band or anything, though I did dig this song (and "Politically Correct") back in the day. I just have an encyclopedic knowledge of stupid shit.

Darn, I was hoping this was about the Crystal Pepsi song. I was looking forward to seeing Todd explain how Van Halen qualified as a one-hit wonder.

Teen Spirit,Lithium and Heart Shaped Box are the ones I remember. But I am sure there is a few more. Didn't You know your right chart?

Yeah they had a bunch Pennyroyal Tea for instance was a #1 Hit on the singles charts. Even in the most nebulous way you could claim someone was a 1 hit wonder (And it really is a Nebulous term) Nirvana wouldn't really work.

For a big name group that is a one hit wonder the first that comes to my mind is The Grateful Dead. They had one hit "Touch of Grey". Then you got bands like THe Ramones who are well known and got a huge fanbase, but as far as I know never had a top 40 hit in the USA. I know they had a few songs chart in the UK and were HUGE in South America. Kind of like how in Brazil the Pixies are huge.

2 things.
1. I remember getting into this song during the Limewire days where it was incorrectly labeled as a Sum 41 song, only for me to end up liking it more than any Sum 41 song.
2. It's a bit of a shame how they are considered a One-Hot Wonder, when their song "1985" got way more famous because of Bowling for Soup.

I remember seeing them open for Bon Jovi in 2001. It was the last leg of the North American tour that year and Bon Jovi came out during the final song of SR 81's set and were messing with them, unplugging instruments and covering cymbals with towels. Yeah that's all I got.

I actually have their first album, and if you were expecting a whole album of speedy pop-punk like Right Now or Politically Correct, you'd be disapointed. Most of the album outside of those two singles were slower, mid-tempo songs.

Ah, neat. I generally find his One Hit Wonderland episodes more fun than the current stuff, since the retrospective aspect tends to be interesting.

I'd never heard of this song, which I thought was weird because I was into that sort of music at the time. Just had a quick Google and it looks like SR-71 never released anything in the UK for some reason.
